alright I know this doesn't belong here but I wanted a lot of people to back me on this one...

MODERATORS I think that the forum traffic could be decreased considerably if OC offered a chat room for some of us to go in and ask our really dumb really quick questions.

Anyone behind me on this one???

i'm also a member of OCAU and we have a chatroom. i can assure you it doesn't decrease the traffic in our case.
it just gives us an extra place to hang out. :p

it's still a good idea though. especially if the forums are done at any stage. you still have somewhere to got to find out what's going on.

I think it should be easy enough to set up an IRC server somewhere. However, if you want the redundancy thing then make sure it is hosted not in the same place as Overclockers.com.

just thinking of something low-key, very closely related to overclockers.com that exists now...

even if its is cheap little java chat applet...

Run a search on Forums Comments and Suggestions. skip put down his foot and simply said no. :( We want traffic towards the forum to get it more hits rather than moving everyone to the IRC Chatroom. We'd also have to have moderators in there all the time.

i think a chat room would be easier on irc and moderating it isnt a big deal at all...it would take my traffic away from the forums b/c i love irc and why would i visit 2 places when i could just goto one to get my answer:) i prefer live chat over posting and waiting.. just my 2 cents

Just as Yodums said skip already said no. There isn't much chance he will cahnge his mind. He was very firm on this issue.

yeah a chat room directs questions there, ones that should be on the forum. get an instant messenger, or mIRC.

once you get to know everyone here better, there is something;)

Which makes me wonder why you would post it out of topic, knowingly.

A chat room won't happen, the topic has been beat to death for well over a year.

Get on your fave IM program. I don't know where I'd be without Trillian......it's the easiest way to chat to other OC'ers

Moderating requires that someone be on the room all the time and be actively engaged in the discussion(or at least actively reading). Not only has this been beaten to death in here, the mods have discussed this in private as well and brainstormed in an effort to get it to be a viable option but there were several insurmountable problems we kept running into and finally canned the idea.

BTW, moderating was not the biggest issue either.

You're probably right...but for what reason would we want to *decrease* the traffic at the forums? That's not really the point...we don't need to decrease the traffic at all. We don't even want to decrease it.

I think he means it will save bandwidth and load on the server, sending pages back and forth.

I understand why a chatroom is a no-no.

If you want to get together with fellow OCers, arrange to meet on IRC or something.

Why can't overclockers.com arrange a chat room on mirc Dalnet servers?
this will be damn good, and there will be bots which will monitor what people are talking about.

Why not arrange it amongst yourselves? ie, arrange to meet at a specific time and channel.

because we want many people there to get an interesting chat, I mean why not just make this whole forum prearranged with 2 people communicating. Seriously people here are making too much of a hassle out of this, on mirc it is a piece of cake to set up and you can get bots there 24/7 like in other channels.

Did you bother running a search on this situation?

The problem is that technical question need to go in the forum not chat rooms -- it will happen. Bots don't always work, that's why moderating is a pain. There are people who are going to be working around bot like they work around the swear filter on this board.

It will just drive everyone away from the forums.

I really doubt it, I have seen other similar forums creating chat rooms on mirc and forum traffic was not reduced

Maybe, but this is what the moderators have decided on the issue. As far as we are concerned this is a closed issue and really not up to discussion, or well it is but we are not going to change our mind on chat rooms :). Like I said earlier in this thread nad the other numerous threads on this, we have looked at it in depth at the possibility of doing it but for a variety of reasons we decided to not do this.

It's been discussed at least twice, and attempted at least twice (I was part of the 2nd attempt) and it didn't really work well. There wasn't enough support from the members or mods to make it work.

Do a search for answers. This is a dead issue.
