View Full Version : Tomshardware says SuperOrb is noisy n doesn't perform well?

i just removed my FOP32 n changed it to a Mini Super Orb. Other reviews say Super Orb super ok! while tomz hardware says SuperOrb sucks.. whatz d real score?!
Tomzhardware also said Super Orb is noisy but i feel that FOP32 is noisier n rattles d table a lot! the super orb is quiet n i dont feel like sum1 is drilling my table.. did i make a right decision with the Mini Super Orb?!?!?!!

My FOP-32 was quieter than my case fans. I'm sure the Orb family has a place in processor cooling. From all that I have read about them, that place is not in OC'ing, let alone high speed (read wattage) P4 and T-birds. I don't like to "Parrot" what I haven't seen myself, but having read a ton of reviews, I have never seen even one credible review give glowing marks to the Orb family.

The one thing I don't get about Tom's review is that he slams the Orb, but yet it places 4th out of the 23 fans in his tests. I could understand if it didn't cool well for him, but he praises coolers that tested much worse.
I have a Orb, and the main reason I don't like it is because its a bitch to get on and off the socket. I bought some Artic Silver2 paste, and had such a time getting it off the socket, I decided never to use it again.
If Toms Hardware had something to slam on the Super Orb, that would have been a good point.
I now use a FOP 32, and it is louder than the Orb, but not by much. Mainly it just has a higher pitched tone to it.

So basically it places forth out of the test, but is only the 6th loudest in the group, then on the other hand the alpha p is one of the loudest also, but it places near the bottom in cooling performance. What am I missing here?

so it means that i made a VERY big mistake buying a Super Orb right? i should just stick with FOP32 or 38 right? =( at first i thought it was a great fan cauz a lot of reviews says itz a good fan.... =( one thing positive about the mini super orb is that itz very easy to install (on my part) i cracked a Duron just installing an FOP32 and the orb fits without a problem.....
the orb is also a lot quieter than the FOP32.. dunno about the other's opinions... one thing i didn't like about the FOP32 is that it rattles the table! making you feel that someone is drilling a hole down your table!!
so i dont know about the reviews if they are wrong =( maybe the newer orbs are of better design?! i just bought this 2 days ago!

I have found the FOP to be easy to install if you are careful. Use a screwdriver to press down on the clip handle, and use your fingers to attach it. If it rattles your case put something under it. A small towel, cloth placemat or a rubber doormat should do fine. The best thing I have found is to attach an 80mm to the FOP for reduced noise and increased performance.

You should have gotten an Alpha PAL6035 with a Sunon 23CFM or YS-Tech 27CFM fan. It wouldl keep your CPU fairly cool with little noise.

if only we had those here.... so far after weeks of searching.. we only have Globalwin FOP32, 38 (not sure), Volcano, the Orb family and the coolmaster.... so the first i bought was a FOP32 but it killed a Duron.. so i'm scared of using it again.. now im using a MiniOrb... i read in Tomshardware that itz 1C hotter than a FOP32 so i'm satisfied with the orb.. not to mention that it looks very cool and doesn't make that grinding noise and rattle that the FOP32..

they are junk. they are total and complete junk. read ALL the reviews you can find and you will see that the results vary all over the place.
orbs are a gimmiky turd that is being marketed to you. run from it. it is bad.
My gimmicky turd gave me pretty much the same temps as this FOP32 does, in fact, it idled alot lower, but maxes out the same, or maybeo one 1c higer.

well... yap d reviews all over the net says that super orb is king.. while d others say itz just like an FOP32... well... i have both the orb n FOP32 so i think i'll junk the FOP... i dont have money to buy a new cooler!! maybe in d future.. but for now... Super Orb your gonna stay with me ^___^

I generally trust the reviews done here at Overclockers.com, and they rate the Super Orb exceptionally poorly. Also, this heatsink test (http://www1.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1430)at Anantech (http://www.anandtech.com) was done using a good testing methodology. And guess what heatsink is bringing up the rear? (hint: it's not the FOP)
Just look at the testing methodology. the Sorb looks good when compared to crappy HSF's. and it looks good in poorly done tests also. I am a fan of the tests here and at Frostytech.com, because they test things in a smart way.
I can also tell you that the thing is two peices, and that it don't have thermal paste in the joint either. And that the two fans serve no real purpose. And that it performs a lot worse with durons than Tbirds because of the smaller duron die.
If noise is an issue stick with your fop 32, if not get a WBK-38(37cfm), or a Alpha with delta fan(37cfm)

if you wana get some performance outa that orb drill a hole through the base(horazontaly) and atach nipples at the end. with a water cooled orb i get 35C max

the temp readings are already as high as 53C =( i think i made a REALLY BIG mistake of buying the SMOrb... =( i'll give you guyz info when i change my processor later.. i'll reinstall the FOP32 and i'll tell you if my temp has dropped..

Holy Cow! That is too high, what speed are you running ? With such wide results reported on the Orbs, I wonder if some of them are better than others? I.E. crappy manufactoring.

orbs are very stylish, but they are an awful design for cooling. Stick with a more traditional heatsink, as good heatsinks have good surface area and airflow. The cheaper volcano ii from the same company as the orbs is a better cooler, and the alphas and global wins are even better. Get a PEP66 for cooling, you can mod it to put a quieter fan on it and get a great hsf.

hehehe at least.. BYEBYE to Super Orb! the FOP32 has come back to her home base with a new Duron 800 landing pod overclocked to 1000!! hehhehehe... even though im at 1.85v my temp is still at 52C.. if im not overclocking i might post around 45C.. the local temp here is around 35C and the room temp is around 30C.. i'm trying my best to cool the system down... can anyone give me some advise... i already have one fan blowing air in and 2 fans blowing air out..i have a FOP32 ... all my cables n wires n budles together...

In addition to all the negative facts posted above on why NOT to use a Super Orb, they are also CHIP KILLERS. They fit WAY too tight and crack dies very easily.

Pretty much all AMD heatsinks are chip killers though, so that's not a very big reason IMO. Just be careful when attaching any heatsink. The SuperOrb's sub-par performance is a good reason to replace it though.

You aint kidden! I thought I was going to break my dads T-Bird 1200 for sure putting the Mini Super Orb on his chip! Man you should have seen his face when I told him it might break going on, hehehe!
It is a real bitch to get on though.

The Volcano heat sink has spec's similar to other TT products. The Everflow fan appears to run at 26CFM, not the 36CFM that is advertised.

Touching on the valcano subject I emailed them to ask about retesting the fan output on there product. I mentioned the report in this thread. They said they would get back to me ...or the check is in the mail ... or its only a cold sore or something to that effect
What about the new one one the forum from mellinium thermal solutions thats suppose to knock at the back door of water cooling ? Any more word on that one?
Being a Chrome Orb and Super Orb owner, I have to agree they are not the best coolers out there. But they are not ****, and they fit no tighter than any other HSF I've used (you can bend the clips, you know!). For a while they were cheaper than a lot of the really good HSFs, and that's where they flourished. Times have changed.
Now, the real point of this is to let you all know about the Volcano II. It's really what it's craked up to be, people! It's the poop. It's quiet, it fits your mobo, it cools much better than the orbs and about as well as most of the other stuff out there (including HS's the whiny-ass Deltas), and it's CHEAP!! As far as longevity of the fan, I can't comment. I've only had it for a week and a half. But I've noticed seriously lower temps and less noise. This is the one you want, people. $12.50 (!!!!) at:

Its the 2nd best Aircooler money can buy...though at a price of $40 including the fan, I'm not sure if the money wants to buy it. :D

It does suck, put ur fop32 back on, If u have got a hardware monitor thingie for your motherboard install it and look at the temp, put the crap orb back on and watch the temp rise to about double
