My Athlon XP 2100+ is running at 79°C with no load.
I have tried to reeinstall the cooler without any changes.

The airflow in the case is very good and my motherboards temperature is about 27°C

Could I have damaged the cpu when I installed the heatsink.

My cooler:
Thermaltake VOLCANO 7+

I am thinkin of replacing the heatsink what heatsink do you recomend

you used a thin layer of thermal paste and everything right?

What speed setting are you using with the fan?

I use Artic silver paste and medium to high on the fan.

Ok, It seems a lot of people are having temp probs tonight:)

What version is your bios? And more important, what kind of airflow thru the case? Any fans?

I have bios 1012

I have 3 fans in my case 2 blows out air in the back and 1 blows in air in the front the temperature of the outgoing air is 30°C

Could be the two in the back are creating a vacuum and leaving nothing for the Volcano to use? I have 1 on the side blowing in and a duct (dryer vent tubing) running from the HS fan to the back so the cpu always gets fresh air.

I dont think its the case cooling becouse I have tested with the case opend and there is no diference in temperature

Try getting another heatsink.

An ax-7 or slk800

Funny though, I have the same Sink on my overclocked 1800+ and I am getting 42 idle 46 load temps. Same case temp as yours.

The 1012 BIOS showed crazy temperature increases for me when I tried it.

Using 1011 now and the temps aren't reading great, but they are lower than what the 1012 was showing.

I think Asus is playing with the reading values of the internal diode; I get different temps depending on what BIOS I am using...

Dude ,

I have the same HSF , and I too had trouble with my install. I can tell you right now the heatsink isnt sitting on the die flat. It must be touching it at least or your CPU would be toast.

The best way to install and safest way to install that HS is to pull the mobo out so you can lay it flat.

The design of the FAN attchment to the actual copper Heatsink is poor and easy to fook up. The clipps that hold the heatsink get caught on the chrome attchment for the fan housing ...and LIFT the heatsink off the cpu die. It happened to me , one side was high one side was low...75-85 C it was . SHUTDOWN that muther.

pull the whole thing off and reinstall - being mindful that the clips will snag on one side or the other. Be sure not to use more than a GRAIN of RICE size amount of Artic Silver. In fact I recommmend cleaning the cpu and HS thoroughly before reattching.

Once I got my V7 PLUS on right my temps were 38 C - 45 C stock. OC'd 48 C - 52 C.

I have confirmed that my AX7 is on right.

I install it with a nice hunk of paste, pull it off and check out the "goo pattern" on the bottom. The chip is making full contact to the point of being able to read the lettering from the face of the die on the base of the sink.

You do not need a " HUNK" of paste/goo/grease!!

All you need is enuff the fill the pits and valleys that are not visible to the naked eye.

Squirt about ' A grain of RICE ' size amount on the die.

To clean off you cpu and heatsink use rubbing alcohol and a toothbrush/srubbie. Clean thoroughly , dry , reapply goo , reseat HSF while mobo is out of the case laying flat and Ill bet your temps drop from there previous high temp.

I don't think you need a new HSF. Just double check to see that you took of all of the thermal tape. Then as kchip said, "squirt about a grain of rice size amount on the die." Then double check to see that your HSF is snuggly resting on the CPU and clip that baby in. Try to keep in mind that the temps the BIOS gives you are usually wayy off.
p.s. You shouldn't have 2 fans blowing out and 1 fan blowing in... it's better to have more air going in than out... in other words I would have 2 fans blowing in and 1 fan blowing out

Kchip, you did not read my post.

I only apply a "hunk" of paste to the die to test contact and examine the "goo pattern" I don't leave it on. I then clean it off, apply the "paper thin" layer of paste and re-install sink.

I do this with all new sinks to ensure I didn't get a dud that doesn't contact die and fry my chip.:eh?:

so is the problem solved? I have the volcano7+ and i love it. Only problem is mounting, ive fawked up the mounting on it before and only made 10% contact:( temps were crazy. remounted and nice cool 48c load temps. idle like 40c.
it didnt cool my P4 down that great. 46c idle 55c load:( but then again nothing seems to cool it that well. TH7ii board, maybe it just reads higher temps???
