Try going into bios. I know there is a feature in certain Bios that let you set a time to shut down and turn on your computer auttomatically. It happened on my pentium 233 a few years ago.

Uh what are the temps on it? To me it seems as if its getting to hot. Does it happen when I plays any games or other CPU or vidcard intensive stuff? Or check to make sure the chipset fan works. mine stopped working and the computer would heat up and restart. took the fan off and Supper glued a 60mm fan to the heat sink the dead fan was on and it works like a charm!

When you did the clean install, did you use FDISK to delete the partition and then repartition and reinstall windows? If you didn't, I would try that. Also, load the minimum software and drivers and run for a few days to see if the problem occurs without all your bell and whistle software. I have had problems like that and I found two kinds of causes. First, windows isn't really cleanly installed unless you delete and recreate the partition. Second, drivers can often interfere with windows if they aren't installed right or they can be downright incompatible with certain combinations of hardware/software/PCI slot location, etc.

well its not overheating.. cuz the temp is only 45C.... so its not that....and it doesn't shut down or restarts unless windows media is open or in used.....

There's a joke. Guy goes to the doctor and says "It hurts when I do this." Doctor says, "Then don't do that." and charges the guy $50.

Moral of the story? Don't use Windows Multimedia, and that'll be $50.

Seriously, if this happens only when you are using one program, then you can predict with 99.999% confidence that someone hired their software developers from Goodwill, and you should banish this junkware from your computer. And Microsoft has done this before, as anyone who tried using Windows Channels or Active Desktop can testify.

I'd stop using Windows Multimedia and replace it with any of the free and stable media players. I run WinAmp for MP3's, an older version of Real Player (RP8) and the edition of Windows Player that preceeded the current abortion of a program. Its not intergrated and it doesn't have the pretty pictures. But it works every time.

Good luck-

If nothing else, try another media player (on the same type of file) and see if it crashes there, too. This would help in determining if it's a more general hardware or driver problem, rather than a specific program.

Good luck! -- Paul

Which version of windows? In XP there is a setting (control panel->system properties->advanced tab->startup and recovery settings) for autmatically restart on error. if you turn this off it will tell you which program/driver caused the error.
