How much privacy does one have w/ a ISP. I mean do they monitor what you surf and download....is that not illegle...do they even care? I read that the Canadian Govt may ask isp's to spy on users for them!!!!

this isa large concern for alot of people but think of it this way.. how many million use your isp everyday?and out of them how many of them would look at over 100 websites/pages a day... the numbers quickly go up ;) there is no way they can posible moniotr the billions of packages sent over the connection every day :)

Even if they couldn't monitor it, is it all logged? How far back would they keep logs?

they do keep logs but that is mainly for protection and privacy ie if you are attacked and you notify your isp and the attacking isp they can then pinpoint the attacker... there arent very high detail logs simply because it takes to much to track

They don't care about what you surf.. they turn you on and thats pretty much it.. the network people don't have time to monitor everyone..
The standard logs include IP addresses of places you go as well as time/date stamps. We used to keep the logs for about 2-4 weeks (depending on whcih dslam it was comming from) before they automaticly overwrote themselves.
Unless you are doing something blatently illegal such as DOSing, MASSIVE file transfers or anythign that would cause the ISP to actually notice you... they wont even remember you exist till you default your bill and they turn you off
*based off 3 years ISP tech experiences as well as manager of Abuse/Naughty Network abusers* Yes I was the biznatch that would email you telling you to stop spamming/portscanning/or otherwise pokign around other peoples networks or else... and yes I did throughly enjoy turning off peoples accounts and listening to them wine cause they can't use their mass mailers anymore :)
that's what Carnivore and Magic Lantern are for...

Your rights to privacy on an ISP are nil and they are outlined in the Terms of Service contract.
Most ISP won't turn over your browsing and email records without a warrant. However, you are entitled to NO privacy what so ever by default as it is their network.
People all to often mistake laziness and undermanning for privacy. The reason most ISP don't track this stuff is because they aren't capable of doing it hardware-wise, they dont have the man power to do it, or they are just plain lazy.

Its not lazyness.. you have NO idea just how many records and logs they do log. They have to overwrite them cause they do fill up fast. they could fill a 100 gig drive with 1 1/2 days worth of logs from 1 co-location.. now imagine dozen's of co-lo's with each dslam writing to disk and you can see why they overwrite.
If the feds or anyone wants logs on you they usually have about 2-4 weeks to get them before the ISP usually overwrites and looses them forever...
