I Had a look at my maxtors.
The whole unit is sealed off...spindle included.
It would probably have to be done at the factory.

You could still try a repair shop...couldnt hurt.
You could send an email to maxtor support and see what they say.
ok i emailed maxtor- but wont get a reply til monday
also checked my warenty on the website using the serial off my HD- and its still in warrenty :D
so if it IS ****ed then it will cost me nothing to get it replced :D

Nice:cool:
Make sure you get all your data off the drive before you send it in and if there is any private info on it, erase it good!

A format is no good, write zeroes to it 4 times over. Then only national security agencies and multinational corporations will be able to afford to recover your data.

definatly contact Maxtor
AFAIK those holes where you would lube it are sealed
and breaking the seal will void the warrenty

Well my one computer wouldnt spin at startup every time a few weeks ago and I replaced my motherboard battery and it seemed to fix the problem. You may want to try this because you can get one of these batterys for about 2-4 bucks at staples. They are also called "Medical batterys" Just look on the one that is in there, take it out, and find one at the store that looks like it.
but its a brand new mother board- and the issue happened on my previous board to- so i really dont think the batery is at fault.
Ive been reading up on the low level format- writing zero's
this seems quite extreme but i guess quite nessisary
anybody ahve any idea the sort of time scale i would be looking at with a 60gig hd?
Why do you need to format it to send it to Maxtor? Have something that you don't want anyone to see? Formatting a 60gig shouldn't take more than a half hour. Maybe twenty minutes.
there a programs and documents that maybe i shouldnt have- or have been obtained other than bu purchasing.
i would just be happier if it was wiped.
i know a normal format wont take to long- it was the writng zeros ona 60gig i was wondering about:D

Is that called a low level format? Am I right on that?
I don't know.... But there are several utilities on the net that you can download that can zero a drive. And even if you can't find one, the manufactuer should have one to download from their website.

yes it is called a low level format- and yes maxtor have one on there site :D
hehe lube.
sounds like a bummer problem, and a useful tip if anyone encounters it -- thought I've never heard of this happening, but it makes sense.
