Ok, my family has a Linksys Router (we have cable internet) Model BEFSR41. There are 2 computer on it, mine and my dad's. I installed win98, and i used to have 98SE, my dad's computer has SE still. I have a Linksys 10/100 NIC.

Ok, onto the problem. I reinstalled 98 (only disk i had) becuz my net and all sorts of stuff werent working, so i had a fresh install. The wierd thing is that the router and everything is working, its justthat i cant use IE to get to the internet. I can get into my dads pc from mine, but it wont connect to the internet. I can ping the internet (tech support gave me a page to ping), but that is it. Is there a problem? thnx

Open up your routers setting's by typing the IP address for it in you address bar in internet explorer. Click on the advanced tab on the right. Then it will bring up a new screen. on the left there should be a tab that say's forwarding. That's where you can tell the router what port's to forward to what IP address. Post again if you don't understand this.

If you can ping internet sites from a DOS prompt then the likely problem is your browser is not configured to work over the LAN. You need to check your browser's connection settings and set it to use the LAN. IE will usually try to auto detect proxy settings.

To open ports on the Linksys router you must go into the web based setup menu, go to advanced settings, and then forwarding. Enter the port number to be opened, check whether it needs tcp, udp, or both (if you don't know check both) then enter the last octet # IP address of the computer that needs to use that port, click enable and apply. Done.

Make sure your browser is configure and before you do anything like the first responder said, please make sure the routers IP address is set as the gateway in your network properties.

ok, but what exactly should i configure. My LAN settings are auto detect and there is nothing checked in proxy settings or whatever that are in the LAN settings. hmmmm.....i actually think that my gateway maybe set to the wrong ip. Ill check bak on it tommorow when i can use my pc. Thnx

This may sound stupid but, have you tried other browsers. Mabye its only IE's fault.

I use it on my linux systems and haven't had any problems with it. Supposedly the latest release has a pop-up killer in it.

I have my Linksys set up as gateway and DNS server in the tcp/ip settings applet in windows and linux: all connect fine using IE, Netscape, Mozilla and Opera.
Check that- probably the problem ;)
