is there software that will allow me to manage the other comps from just one computer? i dont have that many monitors but i need to do maintaince on the file servers/folding rig once in a while. i.e. something like remote desktop but over the local network instead of the net.

thanks in advance

a monitor\PS2 switch box for 8 PC's could get pricey with the cost of the box and all of the cable's. I've thought about getting a switch box for when I'm working on other's PC's instead of unhooking my keyboard, mouse, and monitor. But I don't think I'd do it for 8 PC's.
But if cost is not an option it would be ALOT faster with much less lag.

I use VNC on my network- currently 7 (but up to ten at times) pcs on my lan.

It has a few big pluses for me:
Free
Multi- Platform: Windows (9x, NT 4.0, NT5 kernel) Linux, MacOS
Free
works in a browser if need, or using its own Viewer window.

Oh yeah: did I mention that it doesn't cost anything? :)

i though vnc uses the net as it media??? downloads are very costly here in australia so i if someone could tell me if that works with out using the net that would be great

I just checked the size of the download- 978kb zip file.
Download once, copy to the other computers on your network.
Install- set the default password and connect!

LINKAGE (http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/)

It is only available as a download, afaik, but its pretty small....

As far as using the net as its media...it works over tcp/ip, but on your local network it will never go onto the internet. Do you have to remotely access pcs that are physically at another location?

dude, if vnc doesn't cut it. Get SpyAnywhere, it is awsome. You put it on all the comp'ss w/ no monitor(setup is <5mins) and type in their ip in the web browser. Then you can control the comp throuh IE and it actually works WELL. Only prob I saw was I had to dial up the internet before IE would go to the comp's IP address.

VNC can work over a WAN or LAN. I use it just fine here myself for adminisstrating my server. You just type in the name of your computer to access it over a LAN, or its ip address if its a fixed ip (like mine would be 192.168.1.3).
