Guys what do u think would be at least a bit faster for games and such?I guess the K6-3 has an advantage cause it has a 256KB L2 on-die cache, but on the other hand the K6-2 has 100mhz more. what's your opinion? I'm trying to upgrade an old Socket7 mobo, and it is running an MMX 233 @ 266, the mobo won't do more than 75FSB cause of PC66 ram, so I have the option to put the K62 in a SS7 mobo which has multis upto 5.5 (+ the hidden x6 of the K62) and a 100FSB.

In short, I've got a choice either put it in a mobo that has a K6-3 installed at 450mhz, or just put it in the old Socket 7 and run it at 450 too (75x6)
OR put the K6-3 in that mobo and run it at the same 450 (75x6) and the K6-2 in the SS7 and OC to 550 or more. (The K6-2 chip is a 500 which was garanteed to work at 550mhz, the K6-3 is a 400 chip, was mine once, and runs at 450 right now)

I hope this is not too confusing. please help.

More L2, in almost any case, is a better option.

For a slight comparison, I have dual Celeron 366s at 550 and a dual PIII 500 at stock. The extra 50MHz on the Celerons does nothing for them and the PIIIs still handedly whip them in anything CPU intensive.

I don't think 100MHz is going to make up for that L2 when it comes to things like games. The K6-3 also has added instructions missing on the K6-2.

I got a little lost in your post but if you have to run the K6-3 at a 75MHz bus, it might suffer a bit due to memory bandwidth in comparison to the K6-2 at 100MHz. If that's the case, you may come out close to even no matter what you choose.

well since the P-MMX has only a 2mb vid card its not suitable for games, I guess I'll leave the K6-3 as it was (100x4.5) and stick the K6-2 in the old mobo
It might do 83FSB someday if I can get some PC-100 or more RAM

Set the K6-2 to a 2x multiplier. It will remap to 6x.

The actual answer to your question is, as always, IT DEPENDS.

Some tasks will run faster because they are in the larger/faster K6-3's L2, and some are too big to fit in that and the 22% speed increase of the K6-2 will be the dominant factor. Unless you already know exactly how each program works, the best way to find out is to benchmark both of them using the tasks you intend to use them for, and see what you get.

Check the reviews on anadtech, I don't remember them, but if I DO!? remembeer right. I'd rather have the k2-550.

Wait just actualy skimmed afew sites on the matter... I'd take the k3
