LAN on VPN connection problems

Me and my friend connecting thru VPN (over cable internet) to play games on LAN, and every time I connect to him, I'm loosing my internet connection, but can play with him, to get my internet back I have to delete VPN connection settings with him. Any ideas??
Both have Win2K pro.

I think that is how VPN is supposed to work. I would read up on VPN. Do a search on google or something.
