ok, so i decided to give xp a chance again but once again it's doing something annoying and rapidly losing points with me as a decent operation system for myself. in the system tray i have the add/remove hardware icon stuck there and it simply won't go away. everything is installed and there are no exclamation marks or question marks within the device manager. i ran the add/remove hardware wizard and it said my scanner needed to be installed but it was installed. i even scanned stuff!! so, i tried uninstalling reinstalling the scanner but it's still there. i'm truely baffled by this. any help will be appreciated as always.

What's the make and model of the scanner you're using NotHisTechiness? ;)
Did the scanner software have any other programs bundled into it? Perhaps it's not finished installing the bundled software....that's what happened with my printer and only with xp does this occur for me.

Is your scanner usb? And does the icon say safly remove hardware? My d-link usb radio also does this. It thinks that it is a removable drive and that icon is there to let your power down the drive to disconect it. I still have yet to figure out how to remove that icon. :mad:
I have the same Icon But it is a USB smart media reader card attached . I dont think you can remove that icon by any normal setting it will just be there..I am sure somewhere someone knows how to edit that feature out of XP but I think thats the only way to get it out..{If I am wrong cool lol I wont mind seeing it go}
There are a lot of people with similar problems... some to do with scanners and some to do with printers. Windows XP does some weird stuff when it comes to installing printers/scanners. Sure after you install the drivers it works, but sometimes it pops up wiht error messages or has icon problems. I'm not sure what the best solution for this is, but I've left mine along.... hey, as long as it works it's fine with me! :) good luck!

it's a usb hp 4200c and i've decided to live with it for now. if xp keeps doing wierd things then i'll just shoot the disk and put the old 2k on it.

try doubleclicking on the icon to bring up the box. in 2k i know there is a checkmark box toward the bottom saying not to show this icon... i dunno about xp though..
