I have never heard of them being bad.
StreetGlow, a company that makes neon tubes for cars even comments on using them in a pc here (http://www.streetglow.com/site/pcneon.htm) .

What brand name is it?

I think somebody else mentioned that same warning too. Is it a neon or a cold cathode? If you're really worried about it, then return it and get a CC meant for PC use.

If you cut the cables they probably won't accept a return on it.

Did you wire it correctly? Use a 12v connector from a fan or something, snip off all the wires and then strip the wires of it and the neon wires. Connect black with black and red with yellow (First yellow).

That works if you did it correctly since I have one ;)

POL-tec2002, how much did you buy the neon light for? In any case, I would return it @ Walmart and purchase a cold cathode. Cold cathodes are much more brighter than neon lights are. You can get some really cheap cold cathodes (they have about 5 or 6 different colors) at www.bestbyte.net for about $15 !!! can't beat that! good luck! :)

www.bestbyte.net has 8 different cold cathode colors including UV (blacklight) for $15.39
by the way, the lights are under the "PC Modification," section.... enjoy! :)
