Super Orb. Praises/Horror Stories?

I'm considering getting a Thermaltake Super Orb to replace my POS Volcano II (26 cfm indeed!) What is everybody's experiences with this heatsink? Is it good or bad? I've heard that its very hard to remove if you don't do it correctly. Does it cool well for the money? Thanx!

I suggest you Alpha Pep66, if you've enought room, or Pal6035 (quiet with Ys fan 27Cfm), or GlobalWin Fop38 (noisy with delta 38Cfm).

The spec's on the Super Orb are similar to the Volcano. Take a look at the recommendations in the above post.

Well, recently i bought my new 1.2 t-bird, asus a7k133a,256ram,60GB hdd, GeForce 2 GTS ++ and got myself a superOrb.. Well, that didn't work out quite well.. my cpu-temp was around 50 C...and that's no good at all... But then one day I placed a 60x60mm fan on top of it...and what do you know... dropped down to 39-40 C...and that's not too bad considering that I just have one 80x80 case fan besides my SuperOrb at the moment...


Just one thing tough... it kinnda makes a heck lot of noice :/

My recommendation? Try watercooling....trust me, I just did my first one and it is absolutely AWESOME! And it is NOT hard, contrary to what alot of people think.

Although for quiet aircooling I was using an FOP38 with the Delta removed, and an 80mm Sunon at 36cfm strapped on, the stock clip holds it perfect with a tiny bit of stretching. Works great for about up to 1100mhz-1.85v....

But the H2O stuff got me to 1200 at 2.05v and COOLER than with air....perfectly stable...
Next step, 1250..... :-)

Last week I got a 1Ghz T-bird AXIA with a Super Orb. Now, with my ORB, I did OC to 1450 no problem in WIN2k Server, but the heat was near 60C. I ran UT at 1280x1024 for 50fps. Ran good, but the heat was just way too much. I sold the Super ORB today for 10 bucks. I feel good just getting that much for it. I paid $28 bucks for it and I regret it.

I have since bought a Alpha PAL6035, two 120mm Sunons, a 92mm Sunon and 1 Delta. I think I will be happy with those. One of these days I hope to try the watercoolers.

Try the Vantec FCE - 62540D HSF, I hear all this about FOP's and Globes running at high 40's , low 50's. no matter what game I am playing, I never get above 45 C.
Another thing you might take into consideration is, I lapped mine and it seems to help a bunch. The factory surface on most HSF's is marginal at best.

I'm looking at a super orb right now. the reason i'm looking at it is because it is not on my mobo. it is not on my mobo because the POS mount tabs scraped off two tiny dipchips from my mobo. what a piece of crap. just put an order in for an alpha pal6035 and some artic silver2. hoping my mobo and new cooler arrive around the same time, not sure what to do with the POS thermaltake superorb....

Having installed one recently and chipped one Duron 800 I was not too happy. The cooling is average, comparable with cheaper brands - lower 40's degrees C. The observation I would make is that I have noticed is that if the HSF is in the vertical position the fans rev at nearly 500rpm more than in the horizontal position. This would indicate to me as a non-engineer that significant stress is being placed on the fan bearings and I wonder how long it will actually last. Anyone considering using one - don't waste your money!!!!!!

I had an Orb and the clip was way too hard to put on and take off, I'm suprised I didnt break my chip or MoBo with it. I wouldnt buy it. For the same money you can get an Alpha PAL 6035 and it will work better for you.

They cool well with the Delta fan but the clip is not the best.

If you want the Super (loud) Orb {saw this in someones signiture} and NEVER want to replace it OK but if you plan on taking it off just go out and buy a new processor it WILL chip , or round the edge of the chipset and if it does crack ,chip or if you see any residue on hs you might be f**cked I am not even going to attempt to use the Super Crappy Orb .. I will sell you mine, but I take NO responsability for cracked or chiped processor .
