how much faster was a pentium pro 200 over a p1 200mmx ? how did it compare to a p2 233mmx? was it faster than a p1 beause it had more on-chip cache if so how much more?

Sorry its about old tecnolgy but its relevent to me!

pentium 1 200MMx will be faster at 16bit
P200 MMX will be better for games vs Ppro
Ppro will be faster at 32bit
P2 233 will be faster than both

if you want to see some benchmarks, SiSoft Sandra has a
p166MMx, Ppro 200 (256K) and a P2 233 to compair

Like the post before me said, the Pentiums with MMX will do better at gaming and such. The Pentium PRO had a ton of cache, which the original Pentiums did not. The original Pentiums had the cache on a stick on the mobo, which is slower than cache on the chip. I have an old comp that did have a Pentium 1 166 on it, and I replaced it with a Pentium 200 MMX and now it is able to play some of the older games that it struggled with before. MMX I believe stands for Multimedia Extensions, which is a code built into the chip that helps it with processing audio and video. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong about this, but I believe that I got it right. The biggest boost that you can do with the older comps though is to add more ram, most of the original P1 comps only had 8-16 mb's of ram on them, and bumping them up to even 32-64 mb of ram helps a ton. Load times and multitasking are a lot faster and better with more ram.

Well the pentium pro is the first 686 i think. So basically it's an early p2, actually the p2 is based on the pentium pro. I would think that it would be better all in all than a pentium 200. I'm not 100% sure on the comparison between speeds though, but I would lean toward the pentium pro.

edit
Looked into it more. It will be slower for 16 bit, but faster for 32 bit. They do go up to 1 meg cache though, just incase you were looking for one. They do not have mmx though, so for non gaming or multimedia, I would say pentium pro.

gotta love pctechguide, i printed out that article and read it through before. If you are confused about something go there and read what they have, it explains it well.
