HELP! I just want to make it so my windows 98SE computer can get files I share on my windows 2000 computer!!!!
I can see and get files from my 98SE machine and download them to my windows 2000 machine, but I can't see my 2000 machine from my 98SE machine. What gives?
They're both on a router/switch, and I can get internet access on both machines.
My 98SE machine has the same username and password as my windows 2000 machine, but the computer name is different.
When I double click on network neighborhood in 98SE, I get only "Entire Network," and when I double click on that, I get the following message: "Unable to browse the network. The network is not accessible."

Ok.....god we really need to make this a sticky....
WinNT/2K/XP are host operating systems and must have an account to access them.
You need to make an account in the XP box that mirrors the 98 box.
If you don't have a username and password setup for the 98 box you are going to have to make one. Then go to the users section of XP and add that EXACT same account. That way you can access it.
There are no shortcuts, it HAS to be done this way.

You can also enable the guest account on your 2000 box. I wouldn't do it unless you're behind a firewall though. This basicly lets anyone access the files you're sharing regardless of the username/password.

But I have this account set up.... Same username and password for both computers. The one on 2000 is an administrator. Do I have to give the account certain settings?

The userid that you log on to the windows 98 computer is what you want to create on the win2k box:
Windows 98 Logon: Fred
Create a user account on the win2k box, ("user" or "power user" is fine), Username: Fred, password: whatever you want.. you will be prompted for it when accessing the share.
Wonko The Sane:
If you change the guest user's password, it'll allow any username (that is not on the system) through, as long as they enter the guest's password when prompted.
you can add the user in Win2K under computer management --> local users and groups

Umm guys.. you're missing the main point.. it wont matter diddly if he has his 2k box setup with the correct accounts if he can't SEE the box in NN to click on the 2k system to even bring up the login.
Caffine.. can you ping the 2k machine from the 98?
Can you ping the 98 from the 2k box?
If you can't do BOTH of these then don't worry about the account stuff till you get them seeing each other on the network. the machine that you can't ping to isn't being seen. check the settings on that box.
In a dos window on both machines
98SE run winipcfg
On 2k run ipconfig
verify that both have the same subnet
ping to and from each box
if you can do these then look in your network settings. remove netbios if you have it.. its not necessary. Make sure you have IPX/SPX installed on both machines. if you don't then you need it since I don't recall file and print sharing working via tcp/ip only.

As long as you add everyone with sufficent rights of course you can access the share on the win2k from your win98 box regardless of any user account you may have added.
But you will not be able to view the shares form the Network neighborhood instead you will have to type in the address manually.
EG. \\win2kbox (computer name)\share (share name\folder name)

Welcome to the forums!!!
I'll have to try that to make sure it works... I havn't heard of something like that working b4... technically it should.. i tend to use "authenticated users" instead of "everyone" tho, which requires logon.

I agree with you Kingslayer. overclockers.com has some very good stickys on different subjects but none very good on Networking, I'm just setting up a network and I'm having a hard time getting my xp comp to access my win2000 comp, although my I can access my xp comp with my win 2000 comp with no problem
I heard somewhere once that win98se doesn't like accessing win2k files if the win2k files are on an ntfs partition. Perhaps make a small fat32 partition for file sharing use.
I am not completely sure about this as I have not personally experienced it though. Anyone know if this is true?

there are two authentication checks when asking for shares:
1. The share's authentication (when you create the share, you say who can access it.) This requires an account on the computer, except if you chose to let "everyone" in.
2. The NTFS permissions (this permissions is on the folder that is shared). This also requires an account on the system, unless you specify "everyone".
If you specify "everyone" in both cases, you may/maynot have to enable the guest account to let people in (as WildArmSX mentioned earlier).
