View Full Version : How you guys like my refrigerated watercooling setup?

Well I finally took recent pictures of my rig that I built. The pictures are kind of dark but here they are. Look above the photos for info on each picture.
Here is how my desk is setup. My KDS 17" LCD screen on my desk with the mini-fridge on the floor next to it, and the computer on top of that.

Here is my version of the DVD window mod. The way my dvd drive works I couldnt just cut a circle so I had to cut out three shapes to form a circle but keep the center piece.

Here is a diagram of my cooling system. This is how it works: A tank has a 370 gallons per hour pump in it that sucks the water from the tank and pushes it up and out though brass fittings and clear tube. The water runs up and out of the fridge and into the computer. The water flows though the cpu block and transfers heat from the cpu to the water. The water then flows out and back down into the fridge. Inside the fridge the water first goes though the larger radiator with two fans on it. The water is cooled by the circulating refrigerated air, and the the water flows though a by-pass valve system. When closed, the water continues into a holding tank, but when the by-pass is open water flows though a 2nd radiator. I set it up w/ this by-pass system because my computer doesn't always need the extra cooling. When I am running higher load processes, I just open the fridge and turn the valves.

Here is what the mini-fridge looks like. I got it for free from some old guy that moved, and I painted it satin-black so it wouldn't be so ugly. The door had a built in tray thingy, so i ripped it out and put a piece of sheet metal in its place. This gave me more room in the fridge.
http://ghettoblasters.com/tomfiles/mycomputer/9-6-02/fridge-open.jpg
Here you can see the first radiator. The radiator has a large 120mm fan on top that pushes air though it. Under the radiator is an empty power supply box. I gutted the box, cut a 5" diameter hole in the top, closed the box and sealed it everywhere else, then put a fan where a fan would normally go. The use of these two fans keeps cool air circulating though the radiator.

Here is just a picture of the cooling element in the fridge.

This is an older picture but I am posting it so you can see how my waterblock is attached. In this photo I have the GeForce 3 waterblock also installed and connected into the system. Since then I have gotten a GeForce 4 and no longer use the waterblock that I made for the GF3.

If anyone would like to buy this waterblock, contact me for info. I have no use for it anymore because I do not have a GF3. Here are two pictures of it:

Here is the last picture. This picture is kind of old, but it is higher quality so you can see my case window and decal on it.

Well for temps, i get about 20 degrees Celcius on average under a normal load. under a high/full load the temperature gets up to 30 degrees Celcius at most. I can even run the computer for days with out giving it time to rest/cool off. this is the 1st system i have ever built so i am glad how it turned out.
i have had a few people asking where i got the hook-ups girl on my window. i picked it up off ebay for $12. not bad for a 2 foot tall sticker!

No the fridge doesnt have a window. I replaced the drink tray that was attached to the door with a piece of sheet metal that i cut. the way the light reflected when i opened the door made it look like it was a piece of glass but its not. now that i think about it, a window on the fridge would be cool. but what about condensation on the glass? maybe if i made a double pane system and used thicker plexi.....hmmmm i will let you guys know if i try this...

That's pretty sweet for a first system. Do you have problems with condensation on your blocks?
Theorie

i made sure to go in and put a layer of silicone gel over all the near by surfaces on the mobo (back and front side) to make sure if there was condensation it wouldn't hurt anything that was too close. i do have a little bit of condensation on the brass fittings, but on the actual block the temps are not cold enough to create condensation so i haev had no problems.

Brilliant system. I have an old box fridge I was looking to use in such a way. I wanted to leave enough room for drinks though.
Theorie

thats what i planned for in the begining. but then the drinks ended up getting in the way, and when the system ran for extended periods of time (days....) the ambient temp in the fridge always warms up, and the drinks warm up with it! im sure if i had a better fridge (this one is from the early 80's) then keeping drinks cold all the time would be possible, but my fridge sucks. when you get something for free i guess you cant expect it to be perfect though...

NICE, what case did u use?

I dont remember what brand the case is. Its just a generic full tower case that I got from www.caseetc.com a few months ago. they were having a sale on them so i got this one for $55 + shipping. Pretty good deal for a full tower. it even has a removable mobo tray too. it turned out ot be a great case for modding.

That looks cool! I've got a mini-fridge to play with too and have been toying with how to get it going. Condensation has kept me from getting it going, but silicone just might be the ticket for me, that and a splash guard/drain to protect the video card. I have no radiator, but will use 2 6 foot copper coils submerged into a bucket inside the fridge, and keep a small reservoir in the fridge too.
If I get the water going, I'll have to break out the 47k ohm pot and do a vmod on my kx-7. Maybe then I can get this 1800+ agoia above 1.8 Ghz!
But my biggest problem by far is deciding which waterblock to get! I suppose for chilled water, one without and acryllic top would be better?

I got my block from www.cool-computers.com and I have never had any problems with it. Even when I first turn the system on and the temps are about 10 degrees or less, there is virtually no condensation. Here is a pic of my block.

Mine has the silver top on a copper base with brass fittings, but you can also get it with a blue top.

Hmmmm...once again I want to make my setup better. I think that one thing keeping my temps from getting lower is the air flow inside my fridge. After running the system for extended periods of time, the temps inside the fridge get to about room temp. The cooling unit inside the fridge still remains at freezing point and the air in the little tray is also cool/cold, but everywhere else in the fridge gets warm.
Do you guys think that if I install 2 or 3 fans to pull air though the tray area, then the ambient temp. inside the fridge will constantly stay lower?

I haven't started on my cube yet. I was planning to have a radiator placed before the water entered the fridge, thusly eliminating as much latent heat before the fridge took over cooling the water. Have you tried this as I notice you have more than one radiator in your system?
Theorie

That is actually a good idea. I think I will try that. If that does work, the only downside will be that the heat will go into my room...My room is already hotter than the rest of my house because of the fridge and the computer itself! It is worth a try though.

By the law of conservation of energy the heat is going into your room anyways from the back of the fridge. Your fridge just won't have to work as hard. The only way to keep that heat out of your room it to dryer duct it outside.
nice setup... lol is that a crap load of bubbles I see in the closeup pic of the freezer ??
Anyway good job! :)

That is a picture from when I first put the system together and ran it for only a few seconds. Normally there is no air in the system when it is running!

Today I did what I was thinking about in my earlier post. I took the door and put 2 fans on it that pull air though the cooling tray. Now the ambient fridge temps are wayyyy down. I didn't think it would help that much, but i dropped about 10 degrees C average temp. inside the fridge!
