Hi, I've just found this forum, and it seems really cool, so i was hoping I could get some help.
I was going to buy the following parts:
Asus A7V333 mobo
Athlon XP 2000+ cpu
But now I have read how the Northwood P4 1.8GHz will o/c to 2.4 - 2.6GHz. So Iwas wondering is it worth spending a bit more and going for that? If I did, what is a good mobo, considering I want to use the cheaper DDR pc2700 ram, as opposed to RDRAM.
Thanx!
WELCOME TO THE FORUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yep, it will even go over those speeds but let's talk what you need to get, you have ton of options:
Motherboard: Are you looking 4 RAID boards? .. from your selection on the A7V333 non-raid, I would go with Abit BD7II, or if you're ASUS lover, can't go wrong with P4B533 / P4B533-E / P4S533.
CPU: Look for a recent pack, something that has SL68Q, SL63x @ the last 5 digits on the PROD CODE line of any P4 retail box, these babies are amazing O/Cers.
Memory: PC2700 "might" limit you, P4 are a known-memory-hungry-beasts, If you're not that tight on budget, go with CorsAir PC3000 CAS2 or PC3200 rev 2.0..
It all depends on when you're going to buy, new stuff (nice) coming up in a couple of months, but fresh gears always for thick wallets :) .. hope this helps!

welcome to the forums....
personally, if it was me, unless you absolutely have to have this new system i'd wait until around december or january to upgrade, as a lot of new parts are coming out soon, but even though that can always be said, you don't want to buy new technology now and see it washed away in a week, you'd rather see it washed away in at least a few months, but that's the perils of the computer industry....what you have heard is true that p4's overclock well....i say it actually depends on what you're doing with your computer, as AMD 1600+ overclock very well too, for much less money.
rdram > DDR any day of the week. worth the extra bucks. too bad i didn't know sooner :(

hi,
I too agree with maxvla, RDRAM is the bomb.
btw.......RDRAM can cost as little as, or less then xms 3200 cas2.
if you must go DDR, then I highly recamend corsair xms3200 cas2.
you will need it to use the 3/4 mem divisor, and get the extra bandwith you are missing from not haveing RDRAM.
DDR is not so bad for the P4 cpus......yet nothing beats rdram.
