View Full Version : PC1066 256MB RIM making system run slow?
I have just upgraded to a Giga-byte 8ihxp MB with P4 2.53Ghz and 2 Rimms 256MB PC1066 RAM. My whole system is running slow took 2.5 hours to install XP, If I set the bios setting to PC1066 i get XP errors on boot, like Page fault error in non paged area, and memory access error. If i put the setting to pc800 it runs but very slow takes 5 min just to boot to the welcome screen and then another 2 min to the desktop, and no other programs are running at start up, the chipset is the Intel 850E. My question is do I have a defective board, memory, CPU or what else could it be?? Any help is much appreciated.

Go into the bios and make sure your L1 and L2 cache are enabled on your processor....
I will check that out also would that result in the CPU being utilized at 100% in windows when I was just opening my computer.

No, check the process list on the task manager to see what process is hogging all your CPU time.
Its explorer.exe that is hogging all the CPU time when I ty to open the my computer or any window, and in the bios i dont have an option for L1 and L2 cache

hmm, I'm not sure what would be causing that, I doubt it's got anything to do with the cache. You should see if you can find a program to check the ram to see if it's good and go over all the settings on the motherboard to make sure you didn't miss something first.
Sounds like your hard drive is slower than it should be maybe not set right in the bios or the controller is not using the right drivers or it's not happy sharing a ide channel with another device.
Something to check anyway.
My hard drives are being access fine I dragged and dropped several large files with no problem, I saw link on this forum a while a go for a program that could check my ram, but I dont know where to locate it at. Anybody have a link??

sounds like bum ram to me. I'll see if i can dig up the link to the program that tests your memory after i get home from work (if someone else hasnt posted it by then)
http://www.memtest86.com/
Well I was wrong, its not the memory, I ran the memtest over night 8+ hours and not a single error. I am banging my head in fustration what else can it be.
Well to anyone who reads this thread the mem test mentioned above was with the auto settings and no errors, however when set as PC1066 in BIOS and running the memtest I got 569883 individual errors in 1 pass with the diff tests. Looks like I got to RMA some darn memory. And yes you read that right 569883 errors in 10 minutes.
