The American HeritageŽ Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition. 2000
defines invidious as: ADJECTIVE: "1. Tending to rouse ill will, animosity, or
resentment: invidious accusations. 2. Containing or implying a slight; discriminatory: invidious distinctions. 3. Envious. ETYMOLOGY: From Latin invidious, envious, hostile, from invidia, envy. See envy".

A definition of "invidious" in Roget's II: The New Thesaurus, Third Edition. 1995 -3 is
1. Resentfully or painfully desirous of another's advantages: covetous, envious, green- eyed, jealous. See DESIRE.

I really think this is a lame topic, but I was laughing so hard when I got through a couple of these that I had to post. The company pronounces it like #2. People who pronounce spagetti wrong say it like #1, because they don't understand English pronunciation well and that's fine for them. But just a quick little educational thought here: if a consanent (that's a letter other than a vowel, a, e, i, o, or u, sometimes y for you anal folks) is the first letter in a word, and is followed by yet another consanent that doesn't allow standard pronunciation, than it is either a) silent or b) pronounced. In other words (no pun intended), psychadelic the "p" is silent. I can't really think of any word that would fit in with nVidia's pronunciatoin, except for say x-ray, where the "x" is pronounced. Either way, NUH-VID-E-UH is wrong (if you follow English rules, which "ain't" always duh right ting ta do ya know) and the word would either be pronounced "IN-VID-E-UH" or (silent N) "VIDIA). I have to take the side of the Spanards and agree this is definately and evil plot to subconciously cause us to envy "IN-VID-E-UH" over "AH-TUH-EYE" or is it "attie"?

I have never actually needed to say the word NVidia in my life. But I would have always gone with #1 but if you guys say it is #2 then that is what I will use. I don't know many people that share my hobbies that I talk to in person so I don't have to say words like "CMOS".

The way they put the small n is the big clue, if they capitalised it I could see people doing the number one thing.

btw I say "see-moss" for CMOS and "en-moss", "pee-moss" for NMOS, PMOS etc. (it's actually a process for logic chips, not just the non-volatile RAM your settings are stored in)

as far as rules go, then if you say SCSI as scuzzy, then shouldn't MSI be muzzy? ;)

After consulting the FBI CIA KGB GRU MI5 MSN MTV DVD PVC and countless other useless sources I decided to declare my own rule of ettiquette(sp) on the matter.

If you want your name pronounced correctly please include ALL vowels.

There, now if I can just figure out how to email this to the president of nVidia all our problems will be solved:D
