Win2K Advanced Server or
FreeBSD
?
Im looking for a personall server, private FTP, and private web host and DNS. I have the machine, its ready to go, just need to make the choice.
On one hand, i know little about FreeBSD, on the other i have never used Win2K Ad Server, yet have always had a Windows machine.
So for ease of use, what are some opinions?
Private meaning only a few people/friends would have access to the machine, i would access the machine remotely 80 milles away here at home.

I have used all manner of Windows operating systems (except ME- UGH!) and at the risk of offending the Linux crowd, they are easier than the alternatives.
2K Adv. Server has run extremely well, and stable for me.
However IF you know *nix, then there are much cheaper alternatives that may be ultimately better.
I did download FreeBSD at one point to try it- installation attempts failed:(
There are a LOT of linux distros that will install easily, give you a gui if you want and can be dowloaded at no cost but time- but windows IS easier, IMO.

well if it was me i would use bsd but if you are not really familiar with unix it would really save a headache to go with plain old 2k server unless you already have a copy of advanced server

now how will i know what to do with Win2KAS? is it an easy walk through? The reason i ask is i have NEVER done this before and i have no clue which direction to go. Will i be able to use php based programs in a MS based OS? will Apache work? can i remote access the machine? as i have never been able to remote access any of my XP machines on my network, hell i cant get XP to network in my own home. the only time i got 2 pc's to talk was with a crossover cable. Im trying, but it seems that im failing more than anything else. its hard because all i have is this online forum, nobody to come over and work with me, so im confused most of the time.
Im leaning more towards Win2kAS due to my crashing BSD on the server trying to configure telnet and other things, dang root privilages. reading up online does me no good as i space it off.
I really need this server.
