View Full Version : Stupid problem I've never seen
2 weeks ago I did a format to my hard disk and reinstalled WinXP Pro. So I had to reinstall every program as well.
Today, when I try to install OfficeXP, during installation, it says --------------------------------------------------------------------
"Error 1311. source file not found: E:\OFFICE1.CAB. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it."
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And also there are two buttons let me choose, one is "retry", another one is "Cancel". So I pressed "retry", it keeps giving me the same thing "Error 1311......". When I press "Cancel", it just cancelled the installation.
I redo it several times, it just give me the same resault.
I CANNOT INSTALL OFFICE XP ANY MORE??
It's still the same CD, same computer I've used before. I've installed this OfficeXP many times before, I've never seen this problem.
Anyone knows this problem?? How can I slove it in order to successfully install the OfficeXP??
I am in a hurry, I need Word for my homework.
thanks

I do understand it's a rush so I'm guessing the mods will have some sympathy for you for posting it in GCRD.
Anywways try taking out a lint-free cloth (Best) and isopropyl or nail polish remover if you have it and then clean the back of the cd-rom and see if that helps. Sort of the only suggestion I have as I sometimes get errors and that's what I get for having my finger prints all over them or being careless about them.
If that doesn't work try it on another computer and then if that doesn't work contact MS.
It's not working. I just checked, the back of CD is 100% clean due to it's always inside the CD case. And also, I just gave away another system, at this moment execpt this system there is only a notebook in this house, and the hard disk on that notebook has no room for OfficeXP right now. So, there is no place to test the CD, and I do believe the problem is nothing to do with the CD. My guessing is -----conflict with some other program or some kind of bug from Windows new updates.
Really need help now! Help!

Have you tried rebooting and installing instead of trying it all in the same bootup.. ?
It sounds to me as if the CD maybe damaged as it's indicating there's a problem with reading the .cab file, it is worth a try to clean it anyways there maybe some spots which isn't visble, it wouldn't hurt. Do you have a CD-RW...? Try installing from there.

Yes, I did reboot. I've tried all the simple solutions I could think about before I posted here.
The CD is clean, every time after I used it(only a few times of course) I put it back to CD case right way, so it's clean.
And as you know, there are 2 CDs in this case, one is the one contain Word, another is "Media Contect", they are all a part of OfficeXP. The "Media Contect" one works, I just installed it, but just this contain "Word" one has that "error" during the installation.
I just tried it with CD-RW, same thing happened. So my DVD-ROM is fine too.
Try copying it to your HD first, then installing it.
oK, I just tried what u said. And it's not working, but this time it gives me a "error 25003". I've tried twice, same resaults.
It's not going to work. I do have another copy of OfficeXP(got both from college), and I tried the other copy, the "error 1311" happens on this one too, so the CDs are ok.
Now I really think it's some kind of program conflicts with the installation of OfficeXP.
Really need help!!! I have to use Word at least!
(and whoever moved this message from "general computer discuss" to here please move it back, my problem is denfinatly "general computer", not "software" because it's not the problem of the software on the CDs, and the most important thing is ---- not many people here to view my post, I got 36 views in 1 hour last night when it was still in "general comoputer discuss", and now almost 1 full day passed only a few more pp viewed my question, at this rate I can never find someone who can help me out:( , so please move it back to when I put it originally, thanks)

"my computer ate my homework, I swear" usually doesn't go over well. I guess you could try reinstalling windows, but that would be an awful lot of hassle.
Try an older copy of office if you have it

Try disabling all programs that start up when you start windows with msconfig, kind of a minimum startup. See if that helps....
Good news!
My problem is sloved!!
The first time I got "error 25003" when I installed it from HD is because the hiden file "Office1.CAB" wasn't copied to the HD.
I guess the "error 1311" was caused by the system couldn't read the hiden file when turns to be the most important file.
I copied everything to the HD first include that hiden file "office1.cab", then it was successfually installed:D
By the way, the same "error 1311" happened on the notebook too, and after I copied "office1.cab" to the HD on main system, and installed through networking to notebook, it was success too.(after uninstalled the old Office software and only installed 1 CD from the new Office XP, there is enough room on notebook)
