Hey guys I was thinking about unlocking my XP1600 with that unlocking kit that's from www.highspeedpc.com and I was wondering whats a good multi to leave it at after I finish unlocking it. Right now I'm using the Abit KR7A mb and I haven't increased the FSB for fear of blowing something up like my voodoo 5 agp card. I know that I could Nuke my CPU if I put it up too high but I've been working on keeping my sys as low of a temp as possible. Right now it's idling at about 33C so I think I could OC it with no prob. So basically I'm wondering whats a good stable setting to OC it to.

just pump it up and see what it will do
i think you should be able to atleast hit 145 fsb with everything safe and you should get 1800mhz out of it

Yeah one thing I'm wondering about is can I up my FSB and turn down my CPU multi without unlocking it? My understanding is that you Unlock your CPU to INCREASE your multiplier......... so I could go lower right? And just up the FSB to like say.............140? Oh and when does the HD usually get messed up when you up the FSB? I have a IBM 60gig 7200rpm drive and I'm more worried about that then my vid card and nic and sound.

The main reason everyone unlocks their Cpu is to decrease the multi and crank the Fsb, by doing this you speed everything on the Fsb up not just the cpu, Memory, Video card ect..., this will yeild a faster machine than just a higher multiplier setting.

you could probably get around 1800 out of the chip, you can get an idea by upping the multi .5 at a time, and see where it is no longer stable in windows, then, you want to know what fsb your system can handle without anything bugging out. so drop the multi to say,, 9. and just start running up the fsb a little at a time the same way, untill you get an error, then back it off. i'd say you'd do something like 145 safely. then you can figure what multi you need to keep the fsb you want and be in the nieghborhood of your highest stable chipspeed.

Oooooooh ok thx you see I was under the impression that you wanted to unlock CPU's to get MORE out of the multiplier. But most people do that so they can up the FSB and not damage the CPU in the process. So 1st off I should Unlock my CPU....... My friend says he could do it for me hehe so maybe I should let him. I know how to do it but I'm still scared of nuking it :D

The XP1600 needs unlocking less than any other XP chip:)
The multi is set just about perfect for overclocking- unless you have H2O or phase change.....:)
Even then, you may end up at the default multi anyway- it just works well;)
As far as how high to go with muti: that is not an easy question to answer......different drives respond differently to running out of spec, and chipsets and motherboards vary as well.
My epox 8KHA+s will do 170 fsb with any hard drives I've tried, and get no errors, but my MSI KT266 Pro has a hard time past 150.
140 is USUALLY safe for a DDR mobo, but you will need to try yourself.
Take small steps and you are not likely to lose data: it may crash and protest, but 1 or 2 mhz at a time usually doesn't corrupt data.

I got my $52 Athlon XP 1600 from newegg overclocked to 1840 MHz at default voltage!!! That's a little faster than an XP 2200.
Code is AROIA. This chip rocks. It blows away my XP 1800's.
I've three more XP 1600's. I'm going to see if they will overclock this high.
EDIT. I started on one of the others, same code. 1815 MHz, rock stable.

ok for the newbie OC'er what difference does that AROIA core have on things and how can I check this?.

AROIA and AGOIA are the different production batch codes I believe. these are the best codes for AMD chips as of current. OF course the AGOIA "Y" is the king....With a stock FSB of 10.5 I think you should just hold off on unlocking and see how far you can push that chip without unlocking first. As stated above, USUALLY only watercoolers and phase changers will need to unlock that chip to get more performance. I got almost 1.8 gigs on the stock multiplier. Try that first...Don't let your friend unlock it. If he messes up will you blame him? Do it yourself and feel a little terror the first time you do it. Nothing beats that kind of rush....Especially if your poor like me at the moment.....LOL

Ummm....the stock fsb is 133 and the multi is 10.5 ( Just don't want to confuse the newbie ocer) I wouldn't worry about unlocking you proc just yet my man.
What kind of RAM do you have in that rig?
Does you board have a 5:1 divider? If you don't know...post for help.
If you have some quality DDR/PC 2100 ( Sorry don't know what the KR7A takes) and you have the divider...you should be able to easily get your proc oced to 1743 solid as mountain. (166 FSB) My biggest advice to you is to try tweaking a while before unlocking so you can get used to the settings and what you need to do. After unlocking there comes a lot more options available to tweak to your fancy. (I am not saying that new bios settings will magically appear, you will just need to try more things to max you system)
Oh yeah...when you do unlock it...do it yourself. It is a little scary the first time but if you follow our direction to the t...no worries my man!

that's the best advice for a newbie. i got my chip to post @ 1967mhz , on air. still locked.
there may be no need to unlock the xp1600 in my opinion, because it clocks great at default. also, using a good motherboard, and good ram is the key.
i bought these xp1600's so i wouldn't have to unlock. my brothers aroia y hits 1850 on air, and my other agoia y hits 1806, all these are still locked.
try to clock without unlocking , til you get the hang of it, and you may get good results without the hassle.;)

kr7a is kt266a so there is no 1/5 divisor. because of that you are best to raise the multi and bump the fsb up as well. i say put it at 12.5x or 12x if your cpu will not go as high.

He'll need to unlock it. With the KT266A chipset, the highest he'll be able to go (without seriously corrupting his hard drive or something else) is 160 FSB. 10.5*160=1680 MHz. The chip may be able to overclock higher than that.
My advice. Unlock your chip. It's not really that hard. I've done it at least a dozen times. Worst case scenario for me was that I didn't get all of the bridges and I had to redo it.
You can download a how-to video from tomshardware.com.

Ok this might be kind of silly but why would I need to unlock my CPU if the multi is already set at 10.5? Oh and for Ram I have one stick of corsair XMS PC2700 (before I found out that I should've bought the 3000) and recently I bought another stick of PC2100 kingmax at cas 2. One more question people always post about their mem timings..... and I have no clue if I should mess with those or not. I understand the CAS part but all the rest of the timings............ I don't really understand just yet. They post like PC3000 @cas 2 1-3-3 or something like that. How do I know if my mem can handle more agressive timings? BTW thanks for all the help guys I really appreciate it :) .

If you don't unlock it, then the highest you'll be able to take it is 10.5*160FSB=1680 MHz. The reason, you probably won't be able to go over 160 FSB is because of the PCI divisors. At 160 FSB, your PCI bus is at 40 MHz. That's about the limit. Any higher than that and you will almost certainly get serious hard drive corruption. You may not even make it to 160 MHz FSB.
If you unlock it, though. You can find out your highest FSB attainable, then increase the multiplier a half step at a time and find your highest CPU overclock.
I'm running a couple Xp1600's I got from Newegg recently at 1800 Mhz. (12.5*144). They are AROIA chips. Fantastic overclockers, they are able to overclock higher than either of my XP1800's, code AGOIA. (The highest they can go is 1733 on one and 1667 on the other.)

yup. i'm afraid he's right. i didn't consider your 4 th divider when i suggested keeping it locked. i have the 5th , so, it's not a problem here. you could always get a faster motherboard....hmmm, the kt333 type boards rock, and the new kt400's are now out.
i have the at7-max, and i usually recomend the kx7-333 to people, but the folks wanting to go the next step also have a choise of the kd7, and the at7-max2, which both use the kt400 chipset.
there is an issue however with the kt400 only supporting 2 memory banks, which equates out to 1 stick of memory. this applies to only ddr400 or something like that. i'm not completely sure on that. however these boards don't only have the 5th divider like mine does, but they also have a 6th divider as well. the 2 kt400 boards from abit will also support higher vcore, and ddr volts.
i believe the ddr will be adjustable to 3.25 volts and the vcore up to 2.325.
that's definately nice.

If you want KT333 for cheap, consider a Shuttle AK35GTR. You can get one for about $80.
i'm not familiar with the shuttle, but that's a nice price. $87 for the kx7-333 at newegg

Yeah the shuttle boards are great , at least everyone I had was , I bought myself a Chaintech Apogee about two months ago and if you want a great package and a good performing board , this is it . I have gotton this board to 220 fsb and I am neck in neck with RDRAM PC1066 at that speed . I gave 112.00 for my first board shipped , but 121.00 for the second . I got a 9300+ 3d mark score with my gf3 ti 200 only overclocked to 220/500 and I am in second place at madonion with the higher resolution bench and a gf3 ti200 , and the only person beating me isnt far ahead and has like 11 or 1200 mhz advantage on me . I can complete 3d mark at 200 FSB , but I think I am memory limited is the only reason I cant go beyond 220 fsb , I am useing corsair XMS PC 3000 cas 2 . I do think you should do yourself a favor and unlock it though , high FSB is awesome till you trash your drive and smoke your DVD rom , I have went through more DVD ROMS then most overclockers have CPU's:rolleyes: .
P.S. CMC ,where you live in TN?

Murfreesboro is home to Middle Tennessee State University and it's 20,000 students, so there's no good jobs there. Too many employees, not enough jobs = terrible pay. Nashville has plenty of jobs, I think. Not sure, since I'm not really in the market for one. I've been working at the same place since 1996.
