Try searching through the Alt OS forum. Don't ask; search.

My $0.02

Firewall: I personally prefer Tiny Personal Firewall version 2.15, not 3. It is small and free but you have to configure the rules yourself.

Browser: I would say Mozilla 1.1 at www.mozilla.org

IM software: definitely Trillian at www.trillian.cc free and no ads

Here:

http://www.daemon-tools.com/

Direct Link:

http://www.daemon-tools.org/cgi-bin/Scripts/daemon.pl?daemon317.exe

You just install it. In Systray you get an icon. Rightclick and Leftclick will give you similar but different menues.
Just load a image file to emualte in the virtual cd-rom drive.

no partitioning or something like that

It's that easy :D

Probably the best free program out there, a whole office suite in one!

Only problem is, 5.2 was free from Sun, but looks like v6 is gonna cost money...not sure if 5.2 is still available for d/l from Sun...I'll check though...

Mike

EDIT: http://wwws.sun.com/software/star/staroffice/6.0/get/endof52download.html

Looks like 5.2 is no longer free either based on a May 23rd announcement.

However, for the more adventurous, look at that link, they mention OpenOffice 1.0 that shares the same binary code as StarOffice 6.0...

Any word on that website that was suppositely being made?

My suggestion to the list is The Ultimate Boot CD.
http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

Freeware, burnable, bootable. Contains all these freeware titles on one CD so that you have one central source for doing anything you need to do in a catastrophic situation.

Do note that each program title is a link to that program's website on the actual Ultimate Boot website, mentioned above.

Quite a handy tool for anybody, I think...

Lastly, my current browser, Mozilla Firebird 0.7 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firebird/) is an awesome replacement for Internet Explorer and is free, check that out.

Also, on the Ultimate Boot CD page, yet kinda hidden, is another freeware jewel that I sometimes use, BurnAtOnce (http://www.burnatonce.com/).

Holy cow. I didn't even realize how old this thread is until now. This guy has posted on the forum in over 3 years. Talk about mining, lol., but interesting nonetheless. So many posts have been written on basically a freeware list, but I wonder if this was the first one. Its almost pointless to make another one. There are so many of them, its just redundant. Maybe someone should try to combine them all. That would be interesting, but it would be a hell of a post. Guess this thread is ancient history :).

Sorry to have troubled you

Oh you didn't trouble me. I was just trying for a bit of humor. I think we all have done it once or twice. I know I have done a search before and posted in a thread to later realize just how old the thread really was, :p

Let's start with Shareaza! ( http://www.shareaza.com/ )

Now that you have Shareaza, use it to download Linux!

I don't know if its been mentioned but foobar2000 tops my list of windows freeware. For those of you who don't know, its an awesome music player. Lightweight, but endlessly configurable.

I have found a new tool that helps people quickly review many websites. In addition it helps prevent you from going to sites with spyware, adware, viruses, or even just poor content. The tool is the ReviewToolbar which allows users to rate sites, so that legitimate sites with good content are easily distinguishable from malicious or poorly designed sites. The program embeds site ratings directly in the search results of the web's most popular search engines. The best thing is that like all good tools, it is free. It is available for free at http://www.reviewtoolbar.com

Btw, the first post that "renewed” this thread I deleted since it didn't seem to contribute much to the thread on second examination so if the logic of his post doesn't make sense atm, now you know.

Lets see, here are a few I haven’t heard mentioned yet

utorrent
CCleaner
Clamwin AV
XChat
Defiler Pack
Real and Quicktime Alternative
Audacity
Miranda IM
Lynx and Kopete
RealVNC
3DMark
Alcohol 120
Cablenut
CoffeeCup
Portable Firefox

I'm going to say something about freeware threads and I think it holds true for all of them. Some would say they're overused and the constant creations of new ones is exasperating, but I would disagree. Each freeware thread has its unique traits and when combined they form a venerable repository of freeware throughout nearly a decade which is reason enough for their creation. There will never be a one, consolidated freeware thread. Thats just not the way it they're made, and personally I like it that way. I figure one day, years from now, an old OCer will come upon this thread, smile, and remember old times, which is reason enough to keep them alive.

Does anyone know of any good pw cracking softwares? for aim and yahoo and such.

First off, welcome to the forums, I hope you enjoy your stay!

Secondly, the mods generally frown upon the discussion of cracking tools, as they are often used for less than legal purposes. I can't think of a single legit reason to want to crack into someone's AIM or Yahoo account.

WELCOME TO THE FORUMS TheNeonShadow... enjoy your stay, but while doing so, you might want to follow the forum rules and policies...

12. Discussion of the unauthorized reproduction, distribution, copying, or theft of copyrighted materials is forbidden. This includes, but is not limited to discussion of the use of peer to peer (P2P) applications for the purpose of obtaining copyrighted material. Discussion of P2P programs and networks is not forbidden; but there is to be no connection (stated, implied, or otherwise) to obtaining copyrighted material, or other illegal activities.

13. The management of this Forum does not condone theft, trading in stolen property, or the aiding and abetting of those who do. Any such discussions regarding stolen property will be dealt with swiftly, and the offending member risks complete loss of membership privileges in our Forums.

In general, if it is illegal, discussion of such topics could lead to a ban.

5. Should it become necessary to ban someone from our forums, they are very rarely, if ever, given a second chance.

Password cracking is generally done for illegal purposes (gaining entry to an account that is not yours). If the cracking is done on an online IM account, then it is most certainly illegal. Therefore, please do not discuss such things here and please read the forum policies before you get into trouble. I want to see more new members, not more banned members. :)

Forum policies are below.
