How do you convert the 80mm fans that come with a 4pin molex, into a 3, since there has to be something in the cpu fan connector for the computer to start?
The only thing is, I don't want to use all that power from the motherboard. How do people do this? Can you just stick a connector in the cpu fan spot with the wires cut-off? Or is there a certain wire that you plit, so it reads the speed?

You don't have to have anything in there for the computer to start. What you see on the motherboard is simply a fan header that can supply power and can monitor the RPMs of the fan.... It can be powered from a regular 4pin connect without a problem

I have a giga-byte motherboard and I know that if there isn't anything in that cpu fan spot then it wont start, It is a security feature.

What model motherboard do you have? Do all gigabyte motherboards have that feature? The reason I ask, is because I know people that use waterblocks over their CPUs with gigabyte motherboards (no cpu fan at all), and I know there systems still power on fine.

it is a 7dxr. Maybe there is something in the bios, I don't know.

I did some digging and found some informatoin for you. I downloaded the PDF manual of your motherboard from gigabytes website and foudn this on page 25
"Please not:
A proper installation of the CPU cooler is essential to prevent the CPU from running under abnormal condition or damaged by overheating. With support CPU guardian function CPU cooler must connect with this connector, (fan1) otherwise system could not boot."
So you are right, I'm looking through the manual to see if it is a jumper or a bios option to turn it off.

JP6 on your motherboard with disable it. ***YOU*** should verify this in your motherboard manual before you do it though. If you don't have it, download the manual and take a look at what I saw.

you can score a 3 pin to 4 pin adapter from www.svcompucycle.com that has the lead to connect to the mobo header for rpm measurment. let me clarify, you plug your 3 pin fan into this adapter, and then it adapts it to 4 pin so you can take power from the psu, but it also has a second wire coming off it with another 3 pin plug that goes into your motherboard. that should solve your problem.
[edit] oh yeah i think they're 99 cents... real cheap, real effective, i have 3. one of of them the rpm wire likes to come off but i just taped it back in there, works fine.

I don't think a nomal 3 to 4 pin adapter would work. If it is a 3 to 4 pin adapter, then the 3pin part will be a male conneciton just like it is on the motherboard. There is no way to hook a pin to a pin.
He would need the exact opposite......some type of 4 pin to 3pin adapter.
I looked at the connectors on that site and they are all 3 to 4 pin adapters though.

I'm going to try it tomorrow, I'll change the jumper and see how it gos, I'm sure it will work though.
I can't thank you enough. I really appreciate you finding that out for me.

I read the manual like you said, and you're absolutely right about jp6. Thanks!!

didnt really read the first post right thought he just didnt want to plug the fan into the fan header.
