And I was wondering how loud it actually was, with comparisons to an airport, and vacuum i was a little hesitant to buy it. So i plug it in. For a second I think its not on, then I put my hand over it and its moving a ton of air. Now I'm thinking whats all the fuss about?

If you want this fan but are a little concerned with the apparent noise level. Dont be its pretty quiet, and is getting a bad rap in the noise department.:D

I wouldn't say quiet, but it's by no means a death blaster. I had a 40CFM 60mm fan on my vid card, now that was louder than two tornados! As long as you keep the case door on it really muffles the sucker.

The Tornado I got last week is not what I would call quiet but it is not as bad as I had expected either :)

I also have some 8000 rpm Delta's, and the noise level is about the same- but the 80mm Tornado is definitely less annoying, due to the Delta's famed high-pitched whine.

Are you sure you got a tornado and not a stealth? Mine is louder then a delta 80 by 5 dbs easy.

its pretty hard to confuse a tornado with a stealth specially when it has the tornado sticker in the center.;)

are you sure that it would be 5db's. because a raise in just 3db's is twice the apparent sound level.

I've never tried the 80mm Tornado but the 92mm Tornado that I bought a couple of months back, that absolutely attacked my ears.

here's my experience with the 80mm vantec tornado;

Way back when I was using the sk6w/the screamer delta 60 wich ran at 8000rpm that was pretty loud and irratating because of the great whine it produced. Then when I upgraded to the Slk-800 I chose the 80mm vantec tornado and it actually seemed quieter because the annoying high pitched whine was gone, but after a few months of bieng inclosed with it for 12hours a day, and relocating my pc up on a shelf at ear level I custom built to show off my new mod job it just drove me plain insane and it actually damaged my hearing in my left ear, which always faced the pc. To remedy this situation I bought the Thermaltake smartfan 2 and I'm alot happier noise wise, however my temps took a dramatic rise! I miss the vantec fan for the temps but not the noise, one day I plan to make a rheo and re hookup the vantec, my advice is to not listen to it for more than 5hours a day, that damn fan is dangerous!

i got mine today and i would say its a hairdryer on the low setting. the noise is a better pitch than a hair dryer though.

Earplugs....and even then my 235 cfm 176mm fan can be annoying at full power. Really i used shooting ear protection head ear muff type things and will those next to my head on my desk it was annoying...late at night.. Though even though it was about the same level as a delta 68. The YS-tech 40 cfm 60mm fan isnt as loud but whiny like argh turn it off at 12v but 7v its ok. It really matters if your room is loud~alot of ambient noise or really small, in a basement and very quiet. Things that absolutly drive me insane in my room is not even annoying say in a computer store..as i showed off my 176mm fans. This should help a bit.

I got my Tornado today, and I agree with the hairdryer analogy. It is pretty annoying though, so I think I'm going to plug it into my PSU's temp sensing fan plug to quiet it down a little.

for the love of god quiet down those vantecs! I don't want anyone on these forums to suffer the same ear damaging that I went through!

never got a tonado before, but a delta 60...and i took it well. however, the thing that really drives me nuts is my HDD...granted it is not that loud...but the sound it produces just...AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!! CANNOT STAND IT!! well, sorry for the off topic.

that is over 100 db...at 50 db, a 3 db change is noticable, but isnt twice the amount. and i think from 100-120 db a +10 db change is x2 the sound level...then it gets less and less the higher you get.

my sunon 84 cfm is loud....(the sunon and the vantec are the EXACT same fan with a different sticker.) thank God for rheostats....although my cpu is currently running at 32C with it at full power...not bad for a 300mhz overclock. esp since my case temps are 30c...all i need is the new ram, and 2 ghz...HERE I COME!!!!

My sunon ultra high speed was way too loud for me, so i can only imagine what a tornado would be like.

Here's my simple solution (just ordered a tornado/duct today)...I just listen to music when I'm on the pc.
My monsoon spkrs/sub do a nice job of 'quieting' the fans :).
Plus after listening to my subs in my car all day I cant hear sh|t anyway lol.

Does anybody out there know how to 7V mod a fan? I know i've seen it somewhere, but i dont remember where. cuz my tornado is very loud also

connect the positive fan lead to the 12v line and negative fan lead to the 5v line.

Let me tell you the Delta 80 isn't half as bad as a Delta 38 or a Delta 50 (The worst fan to have). The bigger the lenght, the more it hums at a very low pitch and the smaller more high pitched screeching! I can't hear the Delta 80 over my YSTech 120's because the Delta 80 hums over it :)

The Delta 50 is the worst fan you can get because it pushes so much air for its size and ... it's so small = high pitched sceeching for the rest of your life! Have fun livin' with that!

decibels is a measure of loudness. cfm = cubic feet per minute
