Well my harddrive window thing went a good at first but now it sees it about 50% of the time and doesn't see it in windows. Going to try dos when i get my floppy drive cable back.
I think there might be some dust inside the casing. So my solution to this is going to be opening it and spraying compressed air accross the platter and everything else inside the case. If the harddrive is off and i rub the plexi the dust collects on it but as soon as the harddrive starts spinnin it get the static electrity on the platter and starts to interfear with the operation.
I was wondering if anyone had any words of wisdom before I try this tonight or sometime this weekend. Also would compressed air be good for the drive??
A side note there is no scratches in the platter at all.

As for compressed air I don't know.
However, when you open the drive again I suggest Trying to do it in the cleanest enviornment as you possibly can.
For the cover try useing a window cleaner like windex. I don't think that would hurt.
Maybe try formating the drive would reduse the magnetic atraction of dust to the plater, but I don't know.
A little help here?

man i hope you didnt do it to your good hdd, that would suck.
where did you perform the mod? if particals did get in there i'd say its wasted, not that i know all but common sense dictates - they seal those things for a good reason.
tell me it was a 2 gig or something...please!
Also, and i may be wrong, but i would imagine blowing compressed air into it would probably make it worse. I heard you should do it in the bathroom or something where there is little air flow because as we all know in the air is dust (90% skin and hair)
dude i hope you get this resolved, keep us updated :)

Well sorry to say it was a 20 gig nan0_man. And from what I heard if dust gets in there it was pretty much gone. Well I'm hopfully going to change that. I'm going to go back into the bathroom and preform my recovery from the dust. I have to say nothing is on the head of the drive that I can tell at this time. I've seen 2 pieces in there that I missed when I did clean it out before putting it togeather. There pretty long so it shouldn't be hard to get rid of it.
Well speaking of dust. Dust collects on static surfaces right???? Is there a way to destatic the harddrive?? I know rubing on the plexi gets stuff to stick to it and works pretty effectivly. I was wondering if that would get it all onto it if I did that.
Another side note is that the harddrive still can be read everyonce and a while. So it isn't dead but more like incaspitated. (I think thats the word that im looking for.) But anyways the more suggestions to this the better. Please anyone has an idea smart, stupid, or your nuts if you try this idea I'll take it. It would be sweet if it still works but if it doesn't im just going to take the casing off and add a light and seal the beast back up for one last time.
Thank GOD for the free harddrive. Hmm wonder if i can get some from GE?? :D

not sure about static, seems to me static elec could harm the drive, but try the rubbing thing and see if it works.
maybe it is just those peices that you see thats causing the prob (hope so) make sure you use surround wrap on the surface your working on and be sure to wear gloves (not the kind that come with powder on - get the medical ones)
let us know what happens :)
you by demagnatizers that will remove static. they're made for demagnatizing tools for working on computers and things like that. you could try something like that

Wouldn't demagnating the HDD area wreak the data on disk besides wreaking the head on the drive?

do not demagnetise your hard disk what ever you do static is nothing to do with magnetism the only reason you demagntise your tools is to prevent them from damaging your components especially hard disks they use tiny electromagnets to store information the only way to anti static things is by earthing them ie touch a radiator or water pipe. i wouldnt use compressed air as this may damage the heads on the drive they are only glued on! but you can get air dusters which are in like an aerosol can they are clean and dry air! you also get condenstion and oil in compressed air so i would advise against it.
I think the main problem with dust is the risk of scratching the platters or damaging the head

I would have to agree with you on that. I have the drive infront of me right now, but im at work :(, and there is no noticable scratches. I think the drive is still good is because it still reconizes the drive so it can't be damaged or maybe a bad couple of clusters are holding me back. Can't wait til I get back to my apartment to see what I can do.

Just wanted to say thanks for all that tried helping me with this. It was a lost cause because there was a piece on the head and it created 3 rings on the drive. (Outer, Mid, Inner section evenly split too). But now its just going to cover my PSU up when i get my window in. Maybe next time i'll have more luck.

thats to bad my friend sorry to hear it.....
i had a wrecked hard drive a while back and if you want to do something fun with it you can run it with the top off while on and drop paint on it like that spin-painter thing from a while back. it makes really pretty designs :)
