View Full Version : Cooling My New PC

First off, wanted to say that this forum is great. My new system will be 10x better than it would have been had I just gone on my own knowledge.

Anyway, I'm building a new system for myself (First Built), and had a few quick cooling questions. The pertinent info is :
-Tt Xaser 5000a Case
-Antec 400 Watt Smart PS
-Asus A7V8X Mobo
-Athlon XP 2000+ (Palomino)
-Crucial XMS 512 2700 DDR

Think that should be enough for my question.

I want to overclock, but don't want to need a hearing aide by the time I'm 23. I also don't need it whisper quiet.

I was wondering if the stock case fans (5 x Noise: 21dBA, Max Air Flow: 32CFM 2050RPM) with SLK 800/Tt Smart Fan II would be reasonable to allow good overclocking/noise?

Or..Would it be worth it to go to 5 Tt Smart Fan II's for the case?
By worth it, I mean will it make a noticeable difference in the ability to overclock my PC vs the stock case fans. I can spend the money on the fans, but if they aren't really going to help.....

Also, am I going overkill with the SLK 800 if I'm only using the Tt SF II for HSF?

I haven't ordered my HS or HSF yet, as I'm waiting for my Processor and Mobo to arrive, so I figured it was a good time to ask.

Thanks in advance.

Your selection of components is excellent. I heard good things about the A7V8X, good FSB and voltage adjustments.
As far as cooling, you should be okay w/ the stock fans. The SLK-800 is a great choice and mated w/ a TT Smart Fan II will be more than enough for a decent overclock.
Make sure you use Artic silver on the CPU and you should be good.

Thanks for the help there.

Also, one more quick question.

I think I read that the Temp. monitor on the Hardcano 7 (Tt case) was not compatible when using thermal grease on the CPU.(?)

It shouldn't matter though, as the Mobo reads the diode itself, thus negating the need for the HC's temp monitor?

Just want to make sure, as re-ordering parts because I do something stupid would make me cry (not really), and my roomate laugh (very hard).

Thanks again

I don't see how the thermal probe from the case won't be able to get an accurate reading w/ A/S on the CPU? I have a probe butting upto the CPU and w/ A/S it works fine.

I could easily be wrong. I've read a ton about HW over the past week or so, maybe I should print some of this out......

Thanks again
