I found the best trick was to follow any guide, but instead of their instructions to fill the pits, get some cheap SILICONE thermal paste, and spread that over the pits, clean it off, and then continue with completing the bridges...
this took me and red_Hot_Machine two days to work out! He had a greenie so probably cut his too much, seems ok, but mine is fully unlocked!! Tried going for 166 FSb, on a K7S6A at an 8x multi, but still didnt work!! Getting hold of a new type of cooler and upping the volltage to see if that does the trick, but for now, I have an XP2000+@1838MHz...
