View Full Version : Chances of Exchange on dead 2000+
Hey all
I just got my shinny new CPU, a 2000+, and installed it. turned on the power, and smelt that burning smell. And yes, it has now gone to the great PC shop in the sky. I did double check the HSF and i was 100% sure that is was seated correctly.
There is a little brown mark next to the dye on the CPU, and the underside is slightly bubbled near the resistors (atleast that what i think they are). Oh and it was the stock AMD heatsink with some AS3.
Just wondering what are the chances of getting a replacement for this CPU. It is the Boxed Retail version.
Any Tips, on getting it exchanged?
Thanks
Dexter

I wouldn't think you would have a problem. Contact your reseller and they should have a return policy. If they give you a problem, contact AMD. Since it was retail, AMD will help you should the reseller be worthless.
By the way, AMD will expect you to have used the pad supplied with their heat sink, not AS. While not technically better, it is their policy.
Good luck!

wow the stock HSF is soooo easy to mount. I can't think how it could have screwed up. It depends on the reseller. Newegg made me click 'i agree' to a big page about not being able to return the chips if I chiped them or fryed them etc. Good thing I bought the box version with 3 year warranty :D
Yeah, i have no idea, what went wrong with the heat Sink. It went on damn easy, i checked it twice and it looked like it was sitting properly. Oh well.
It was an AGIOA "Y" as well. too bad i didn't get the chance to test it out.

If you purchaced it by credit card maybe the card has a 1 year extended warranty. I would definitely call them and ask if their is anything they can do. You just brought it!
Yeah, i have installed literally 100s of HS before, and this is the first one to go bad.
I got it from a little PC shop near me. I live in Australia, pot luck that i happened to get an AGOIA.
Now my my PC won't even start with my old 1.2GHz thunderbird. Is there any chance that it would have kille the motherboard as well? all fans ect still work, but i don't get any post codes being displayed, its on a epox 8K3A+. When i set the jumper to 100MHz it hangs on "25", but when on 133MHz it does nothing. And yes it is the type C thunderbird.
I guess i am having all my bad luck at once. That and my sound card also died about a week ago.
EDIT: The HS has a nice sqaure of AS on it, and a brown mark. so by the looks of the AS it was mounted properly. but obviously not.

Most likely just the cpu. That is the behavior my Epox shows when the cpu isn't responding correctly.
Now my old tbird will boot on the 100MHz setting, but no v/card output. This is really annoying me.
I just want my PC back.

Try clearing the bios if you haven't already.
Yeah, done that
Thanks for the idea tho
OK some thing is majorly wrong.
just blew the t'bird.
I am 100% sure that heat sink was on properly this time as well. mounted the HS on the mobo out side the case. it was fine.
I am thinking that the mobo could be supplying too much voltage to the cpu or something.
ANY ideas? besides chucking the mobo

I just ordered a 2000+ and I was able to buy a 1 year OEM warrenty for $10. Since I'll be OC'ing it, I thought it was a good bargain. That way, the chip is just replaced by the reseller, and not tested for OC'ing, correct?

nope found the problem.
The HSF clip thing is warped so it doen't sit flat, off by about 1 to 2 mm. which is enough.
This isn't my fault and I better get a new one. i hope.

A text book warranty claim. I think the OEM version ships with a one year waranty from AMD anyway. If the reseller will not hear of it. Take it up with AMD.

You should definately get your money back bro. Post if you have any more probs.
The reseller wasn't having any of it cos i used, AS and because there is a slight mark on the heat sink. He said that I didn't use anything and that is why the mark (scratch) is on the hs, and it is my fault.
Is it best to email or call AMD. I am in Australia and don't really want to call long distance.
Thanks
