Hello,

I was wondering if W2K boots faster with the installation of the service packs compared to the original install?

I've installed W2K on my computer before and the boot time is a little lengther then I'd like to wait.

I've used some machines at my school which are running similar hardware as my computer but have W2K with SP2 and the boot time is substantially shorter then my computer.

I am interested in knowing if the boot speed is due (in most part) to the SP2 or is more than likely custom tweaks?

Thank You for your responces

Now I know the forums were down Sunday, but no one knows the answer to this question?

Welcome to the Forums :)

I've not noticed any difference in start up times between using sp2 and without it.

The reason the machines at your school start faster is that they do not have as much customisation setting running. Such as things that start in the system tray. The profiles on the 2k machine you use most likely have restricted access, so some drivers/libarys will not be loaded making loading time fast.

I've never really noticed a difference, except from a fresh install. When I do a fresh install, it takes forever to boot until I install SP2 or SP3

Thanks, I guess I'll have to try it and find out if I notice any difference. Maybe even disable some of the services that startup.

with out any service packs your hard drives cant use UDMA66
I would think that only DMA33 would slow down your boot time

XP gives the illusion that it boots faster by getting to the desktop before it's really finished booting in the background. I say it isn't finished booting until the HD LED stops flickering after the last app is loaded.

I didn't know that about XP, well thanks for everyones replies I appreciate it. I guess I'll just have to get over the time difference between WinMe and W2K boot times.
