I was looking into getting some rounded IDE cables, then thought it shouyld be quite easy to make my own (usinf flat ones and tape/sprial wrap), i wanted some advice on how to do this.
I read some where that you cut down the groves of the cable, but this seems a bit risky to me as if i miss a grove and cut the actuall wire.

i made mine. it is a simple procedure in fact. only thing i will suggest you is for not to remove the outer connectors from the cable, specially if youre dealing with 80-conductor cable.
its safe to remove the connectors from the middle of the cable, if youre not gonna need them, just leave the external ones on their place.

also, dont cut one by one, keeping at least five wires together is good enough.

I didn't even bother doing any cutting when I made my round cables. I just played with it until it would bend somewhat easily, then I rolled it into a tube and zip-tied it all together. Perhaps not as elegant as other methods, but it works, looks fine, and there is zero chance of ruining an ATA cable this way :D

why would you want to make your own when you can get 2x IDE, 1x Floppy for 10 bucks? Plus they look cooler/professional.

yeah, i agree. not sure about the ten bucks though. just dont get too cheap ones. i think its worth spending 20 dollars, although there is no difference in performance and reliability between the home well made and factory ones.
if you decide for buying them, only thing is not to get them longer than 18inch.

Because you don't get the satisfaction of doing things for yourself and for 10bucks, you can buy a new tube of AS3
