I am running 2 comps with win2000 Pro. I am a verizon DSL subscriber and I have a Belkin 4 port router. (I have another comp on the way with 2k)

I want to network them together, I have internet sharing, but I dont know how it happened. Also, I need a step by step (seriously) way to get these two machines talking. I will try to give all the info I can...

Router is running PPPoE, ummm...I think that is all I know. Is there anyone that can walk me through the setup, I am loosing my mind, I have tried all the tutorials and nothing is 2k-2k.

Ummm, to simply network them together (I'm assuming you're router has a dhcp server) you just need to plug them all into the router and set the clients to dhcp.

If you want to enable file sharing, then put both computers in the same work group (right click my computer, properties, 2nd tab from the left) and share a folder or printer (right click, sharing).

what exactly do you mean by "set the clients to DHCP".
One of the computers is a laptop that my girlfriend uses for work and she was using it all last week, since then, I have not been ab le to get access to it.

Could you tell me what to do, what each setting should be, in order for them to see each other.

I am also wondering if I need to go in and delete all the workgroup stuff, and user stuff, and start over, as if the computers were brand new. Is there a way that you could explain that to me.....I really appreciate you replying to such an basic question, this is the first time that I have dome any networking.

Have you enabled file sharing?. That must be enabled before you can share files. Then like PolyPill said. You have to specify which folders you want to share on each computer.

As far as DHCP goes. The router should come with it enabled. Just have the PC's set to automaticaly get the IP Address. Then it will let the router asign them one.

To *exactly* do it, follow these steps for Win2K:

Right-click on the "My Network Places" icon on the desktop, and choose Properties.
Right-click on the "Local Area Connection" entry, and choose Properties.
Click on "Internet Properties (TCP/IP)" and click the Properties button.
Choose the "Obtain an IP address automatically" radio button. Also, choose the "Obtain DNS server address automatically" radio button also.
Click OK twice.

You are now using DHCP!

Hope this helps.

OK...the accounts. Make accounts on both machines with the same username and password and some admin level like Power User or Admin. Share the folders. It works.
