View Full Version : can a pump pump water straight up?

i have been having major probs setting up my h2o system and i want to dramatically change my layout. The best way i would think of doing this is by having the pump pump water straight up at a 90 degree angle from the bottom of the case (where the pump is located) to the rad in the 5 1/2 drive bays.

is it safe to have the pump function this way?

its perfectly fine to pump strait up, i used 6feet of hose and mad it pump strait up that to test flow at 6feet, it wasnt much tho:p

i have another question man. you know watter wetter and purple ice? i am all out and dont wanna order stuff off the net to pay $15 for a $3 item (after shipping). you know, dtek really makes me mad. when i got purple ice from them i thought i was gonna get a whole bottle like in the pic on the site but i got a little plastic tube of it with like none in it.

i just went to pet world (the local pet store) and they were all out of it. any other place?

i am just gonna run my system with plain distilled h2o what is the pros/cons of that?

Water really is the best for removing heat and running without water wetter/purple ice will be fine, you might see a slightly better temp if you added one but not much.

check auto stores, you should find some there.

heres what i use for a total copper system, not 100%gaurenteed to work after a long time but for a temp setup to maby a permanent solution

i take this 2gallon container that i fill up with, fill it with water, add a drop of dawn dish soap, swish it around and make it all soapy, take as much foam out as possible, and add some rubbing alcohol, use that to kill bacteria, or use a small amount of bleach, and swish that around and take out the suds, then fill up in that

thats what i am using rite now, and i will be using for a while...

You got your 3oz of Purple Ice... what does it matter which container you get it in?

I think Dtek orders the Purple Ice in bulk (like 30+oz bottles that you saw in the pic), then fills up the little white containers. Seriously though, instead of complaining about the ammount, you should have measured it out. ;)

Next, most pump sites will tell you what the gph is at 1 ft, 2 ft, etc. The GPH (example: 158 GPH for Eheim 1048) is at the head, with 0' lift.

you can go to your local auto parts store and pickup a big bottle of water wetter... the "best" :D

yeah, Pep Boys sells water wetter, and so does advance auto parts. its like $3 and change for a 12 ounce bottle of the stuff. I still have a whole load left in mine.

Not to discourage you, but I've never seen a temp drop when using water wetter versus plain distilled water. And masked, I'd watch it with the bleech... too much could do damage to the pump housing, depending on what it's made from.

You can get Hyperlube Supercoolant at most auto parts store too, and it's green instead of pink. Skulemates right. You won't see much temp difference with the additive it's more of a corrosion inhibitor than anything else.

if your just worried about stuff growing i would go to a camping store and get some of thouse tabs you drop in the water

Guys... many of you seem to forget that in a closed loop system, you are actually just pumping 0'...

Just like when you are emptying something, and use a hose, suck the other end and the water just keeps on running.
This is what happens "on the way down" with your water, so your pump is actually just pushing water 0'. Many aquarium filters work this way (canister filters), they don't need a powerful filter because they are just pumping 0', even though they are under the aquarium.

I hope I made what I was saying clear, I didn't read the text 2 times ;)

yes that is totally clear, some pumps are a little cheaper, and they cant push well thru blocks anyway, but diggrr did some tests, he made it his via do 10 feet, thats 2x rated

Sorry, but that's not entirely correct. True, in a closed loop you're not actually lifting the water (i.e. you get a siphon effect exactly as you described). However, this does not mean that your pump is operating at 0' of lift. Remember, meters of lift is simply a measure of the potential energy that a pump creates (so is pressure for that matter... the two are interchangeable). This potential energy is not only responsible for lifting water, but also for overcoming resistance within the system. So in fact your pump will not be operating at the 0' point of the H-Q curve but rather somewhere else... and it's likely towards the higher pressure low flow end in a typical system.

Though you shouldn't expect much of a temp decrease ..as stated above it does help prevent corrosion and try getting bleeding the air out of a system that's 100 % tap/distilled water.it's near imposable! The water wetter reduces the surface tension of water by a factor of two. In turn it should make you pump last longer and possibly give you better flow rates.
