I am in need of a cheap PC. The main reason I want this is at first I am just going to install linux so I get a feel for it becuase I have never used it before, then it may end up routing my internet traffic. So it doesnt need to be super fast. Some things I do have laying around......
Athlon Heatsink
300 Watt PS
Fans
NIC card
Possible CD drive (I may be upgrading a burner soon)
and that is it.
So what do you recommend I should get now. An Athlon XP 1600+ will probably be one of them becuase they are dirt cheap. But I will still need.....
Case
Motherboard
small HDD (atleast 6 GB though)
Ram
Then I will need one of those things so you can share monitor speakers mouse and keyboard. I was looking at a kit from linksys becuase I know that they are usually good with linux. and it is 62 bucks at computers4sure.com but I havent looked around yet, just check there and newegg but newegg doesnt carry them. BTW the model number of that thing is PS2KVMSK.
So see if you can help me out, I check the classifieds very often so I will be looking in there for stuff so you dont really need to inform me if there is something I might want in there.

If you want cheaper than the XP 1600 then this is ok http://www.tcwo.com/cgi-bin/webc.cgi/st_prod.html?p_prodid=1576
For MOBOs I'l go to www.newegg.com . They have a good choice of socket A MOBOs.
I bought my Maxtor 40GB ATA133 from newegg for $64. It's a quiet and fast drive, but if you want something cheaper and smaller, then maybe someone else here can direct you.

I think I decided on that one raidmax case you posted, except I would get from newegg just becuase it is 1 dollar cheaper :p . http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.asp?DEPA=&submit=Go&description=Raidmax+Model+208B%28B
And I got a question, do duron's fit in the same socket as Athlon XP's?

When you look at a MOBO, it will say which it will support. Some support Duron/Athlons and some just one of the other. Also if you want to keep things cheap, go for a mobo that will take PC133 instead of DDR. Or something that will work for both PC133/DDR2100 like this one http://www.newegg.com./app/viewproduct.asp?description=13-135-102&DEPA=1 . I have this MOBO and have no complaints for what it does.

Yep that was the one that I was looking at earlier today. I will probably go with that because then I can upgrade this computer's ram when I make my gaming machines "doom 3 upgrades"
Well I just remembered that my one friend bought a bulk amount of harddrives on ebay recenly for the purpose of reselling. Most of them were laptop harddrives that were under 2GB but I will check with him and he may have something that is about 6 GB.
Then I should be in pretty good shape.

Don't forget that you need a video card for that board.

For cheap Hard drives I recommend Team Excess (http://www.teamexcess.com)
