My backup computer is driving me crazy. I have Win Me installed on it and it constantly freezes. It freezes when I leave it idle for too long, when I scroll down a page too fast, or when download something. I'm not multitasking either, it doesn't take much to make it freeze. I have all the Windows updates installed except Internet Explorer service pack 6, but I can't install it because the security prevents me from getting stock quotes. I ran Sandra Burn-in all night and it runs it fine so I don't get it. I had Win XP on this computer before and it was completely stable but since installing ME bad things start to happen. I've even tried Win 98 and it still freezes. Could it be my motherboard or is it Windows? Could it be that I don't have enough ram? What do you think? Is there something I can tweak? I don't think it's too hot because the side panel is off and I'm reading 38 degrees in the bios. Thanks!

It's the hard drive. Do a thorough scan of it. Could be dieing though it is an older one.

I used a boot disk and ran scandisk to do a full surface scan and found no errors. Could there be something I'm missing?

It might just be dieing then. You could get rid of the partittion and do a reinstall. That "MIGHT" help. But I'm NOT sure.

If you can, download a great program called REGCLEANER. Here is the link. http://www.webattack.com/get/regcleaner.shtml
Once you get it installed and running, go to the tabs at the top and select OPTIONS. Then select REGISTRY CLEANUP, MEATHOD and AUTOMATIC. Also under options select OLE CLEANUP then EXTRA POWERFUL. Then go to TOOLS, REGISTRY CLEANUP and click on DO THEM ALL. Make sure that while it's running that you select CREATE ONLY ONE BACKUP FILE. I would also suggest that you run regcleaner everytime you boot up Windows. Also before and after getting online.

I was having the exact same problem with WinXP untill I started using the RegCleaner. I hope this helps!

I didn't know WinXP could develop a bloated reg. Thought only me and 9x had those issues. But RegCleaner is GREAT< I use it on my 98se rig and works like a charm.
