View Full Version : Memory Tyan S2460
Curious but this is a fact.I ordered Crucial Memory Regestered 2100DDR ecc..
I installed it and system would not get past post screen.I called Crucial and asked why plain Samsung Regestered non ecc 2100ddr worked and theres did not.
Well according to the tech inorder for there ram to run in this system you need 3 Modules of it.I thought what ?? SO instead of returning the ram I bought 2 more 256 meg modules.Today thay showed up I installed them 1 at a time and not untill I had all 3 installed would system boot up.
SO if you own or build a Tayn S2460 and prefer crucial ram make sure to but 3 sticks of it...........................................

Well, I guess that isn't any more odd than some of the other special issues that have happened to some people. From the sound of the MPX board roundup at FiringSquad, they had situations where genuine MPs and registered RAM refused to operate properly.

But that's tangential to the problem at hand... What size DIMMs are you using? I have a tiny Crucial 256M PC2100 registered (didn't enable ECC) on my Tyan 2460 and it's perfectly happy-- I just wish I had more RAM. =)
And are you saying that your alternative Samsung RAM is registered, but is not ECC? Just asking because that's an unusual state of affairs. I have a 128M PC2100 unbuffered DIMM sitting around from an upgrade project, but I was too lazy to test it in my new system (seeing as how I hear registered and unbuffered RAM will not get along, and I have a registered DIMM twice as large-- so curiosity lost out).

I've used Crucial and Samsung modules in a Tiger MP (s2460) with no problems. All of them were 512 MB modules, though.

WELCOME TO THE FORUMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great review, I went by that when I picked my 760MPX boards (MSI and Gigabyte).

You already welcomed me to the forum(s) in the 64-bit PCI thread, but I never like to decline kudos of any kind. =)
The MPX board roundup was nifty, but the situations they describe where they were doing everything right and the system still wouldn't operate gave me the creeps. I suppose I've been lucky in that my creations have always worked (I have a picky little salvaged Compaq K6-200, but it agreed to work after some Win98 multimedia drivers corrupted-- long story).
Other things that steered me to the Tyan 2460 included price, half a dozen PCI slots of unquestioned usability, and that early reviews established that the board accepts Morgans. And since mine works, I don't have to worry-- until I add more RAM, at which time I will fear that my system will fall prey to these completely inexplicable RAM issues.
Not that anyone said it would be easy. Indeed, I rather like your quote:
Overclocking dual Athlons: Twice the fun, twice as hard, less than half the overclock.
It's just that I cheated by getting slow enough CPUs that they overclock just fine. :)

lol...didn't remember your name
Since I wrote that article
http://www.overclockers.com/tips048/
I've had my hands on a MSI K7D Master-L. The overclocking I got with the Gigabyte board was pretty weak because of the lack of voltage tweaks in BIOS. I got a pair of 1.3 Morgans to 1470 rock solid, for Folding@Home.
It's still twice the fun though. :)
I've also got a Tyan 2460 and I'm currently using two sticks of Crucial 128MB PC2100 registered ECC. No problems here and I'm running the FSB at 150MHz.

That is BS...I have that mobo, and I am currently running 2 sticks of 256mb CRUCIAL ECC REGISTERED PC2100 DDR..it runs F-I-N-E... I have a third stick that runs fine too, but I loaned it to a pal while he waiting for his new parts to come in...
I am NOT SAYING Crucial dont work.I am saying this.Crucial is a massive maker of ram and to this day there ram in not approved by TYAN in the S2460 which is just plain weird.I am guessing this weirdness is exactly what I am living with cause no matter the stick NONE of it will boot to windows no matter where I put it in any single situation or double combination.NO MATTER WHICH S2460 I INSTALL IT ON ..{I have 2 Dual S2460 boxes}
BUT ADD THE 3rd stick of ram and BAM system boots perfectly and runs at 140 fsb 24/7 folding.Note this holds true for booth of my dual boxes which is why I posted this topic. If 2 exact systems behave exactly the same with this ram and Crucial tells me ya need 3 sticks and 3 sticks do provide the fix hmmm I think posting this was good for others .................
I have a S2460 with one stick of Crucial 256MB ECC 2100, it works fine with the memory (just a processor redundancy problem). Also had a 256MB Generic ECC 2100 with samsung chips that would not work, damn thing!!!
Wierd problem, glad that wasn't the case for me, couldn't afford it!!!
