Shoot yourself. I had AOL DSL before simply cause it was DSL, available and I would have unlimited access... but still shoot yourself.
Could you please describe what modem setup you have? AOL DSL seems to be very different everywhere. I had an internal modem and had the option of having a external USB modem. I have heard of some people having different type modems.
Some of the gurus here will be able to help you better by seing if you can connect via TCP/IP. AOL DSL is just a can of worms waiting to explode.
If you do have an external modem with an ethernet adapter I doubt you will be able to connect to AOL DSL via your laptop. You will need to setup the router to connect to the DSL service. Please tell us the make and model of your networking equiptment a that would help very much. Once you get the router to log onto the DSL service you could then connect to AOL services using AOL's programming and/or you could use Internet Explorer to connect to the internet (you may have to change a few settings).

Put the AOL manual down and walk away slowly.......we will have a clean-up crew round in 10 minutes........
Naw - seriously - let us know more about your equipment/settings.

 well this is my info:
I have an external DSL Modem by Broadxent. It connects to the computer either by USB or by Ethernet Cable. I've used it both ways with my Laptop and it works fine (the AOL DSL). I just got an IPAQ router from Compaq (the same maker as my laptop) and i set up my wireless antenna on my laptop and that is fine. My lap connects fine with the router, but my AO-HELL DS-HELL does not work. I think AOL doesn't support my router or something. I HATE the fact that one has to be on AOL to access the internet EVEN with DSL (side note) how do i fix that? what settings do i change?
:burn: please HELPPPP! thanks
P.s. i may have said this already but this is where i get stuck: My dsl modem is connected to my router and my router is communicating w/my computer but there is no connection!!!!
where is the modem plugged into the router?

The modem is plugged in in the "internet" slot, where the manual says it should go.
Some more info--->> the Router is a Compaq iPAQ Connection Point CP-2W and the DSL modem is a Broadxent Broadband Blaster

You will not be able to connect to AOL DSL service via yoiur lapttop thru the router. You need to setup the router to connect to the DSL service. Then connect to AOL on your laptop via the drop down box and select TCP/IP.

Because I have never worked with your router or tried to use a router with AOL DSL I cannot help much. You should read the owners manual a few times and if you have troubles call tech support.

The easiest thing to do is cancel w/ AOL and start up w/ a service that is not so insidious and offers tech support for your modem!
I am sure there are many local ISP's that will be cheaper, faster and more helpful. (sorry if i misunderstood your post, but it seemed to me you said AOL would not offer tech support for your router/modem?)

My Mom has AOL....I just shudder, but you know, whatever floats yer boat:rolleyes:
The AOL disks that get sent in the mail make great MOBILES for the kids where I work...also we use 'em for frisbees and sometimes let the kids wet them and stick them to mirrors. So AOL is useful yet.

:-( :-( :-( :-( :-( well i guess i'll go shoot myself now... i called AOL tech support and their STUPID this dumbass bitch tells me they only support linksys and actiontec or whatever routers.. what the HELL is that???!?!?! doesn't anyone know some way to make my COMPAQ iPAQ router work with my AOL DSL???? maybe some tweak in the internet options/settings to make my DSL open and not how it is now (cuz AOL requires u to open their AOL program to access the internet even though ur always connected, yeah i know stupid, but i like aol sorry sorry !!)??? HELP!!!

Ahhh...AOL broadband service...isn't it great?
You won't be able to get your router working with AOL, simply because the AOL broadband software has to pass along special information over the network to enable your account every time you log on. Same thing happens with their cable service...you think its an "always on" connection but its not, and since the router would be serving as the "middleman" of the connection, the router would have to be able to log into the service, which it can't.
Linksys is the only one that i know of so far that have begun to incorporate the ability to use AOL broadband with their routers, although I personally will never take the oportunity to ever try it out to see if it works...AOL has got to GO!

I think it should work. I have Verizon DSL, which I used to have to sign on with user name and password every time I want to connect, it was definatly NOT "always on". It was just like a dial up with 20+ times faster + you can make phone call while use it. THEN, I set up a network with a router, NOW it's just like "always on". I can use the internet as soon as I boot into windows. No more sign up.
I've used AOL DSL before. It was an actiontec USB modem, it got super hot after a while. And aol's sign up software takes too much system resource. Also, every time you restart your computer, it gives u a different IP address because the USB modem also gets restart when system restarts. NOT like the Verizon DSL I got later, it is using a DSL modem with enternet port, which the IP address won't change even restart the system as long as you don't reset the modem.(NOW the router set up made me have 'always on' dsl:D)
I do suggest get ride of aol, and get dsl from some other ISP.

Dude take it easy. Dont you have an instruction manual that comes with your router??? All the instructions should be in there.
Unfortunately Compaq doesnt have the instruction manuals online =(((
okay so basically what you're going to have to do is log onto the router through your browser.
Just type http://192.168.0.1 (or whatever your router's IP happens to be...)
Then depending on what type of connection AOL uses for DSL you'll have to set it up. I assume its PPPOE. basically all you do is select which type of connection you use, then you'll have to input the parameters for the connection, basically just your user ID and password. Then you have the router connect to the internet and voila!
Basically just get the instruction manual, it'll tell you everything you have to do with nice pics and everything. The problem is NOT with AOL DSL, its just that you have to set up your router

Shoot yourself already, and get ATT broadband cable, or get verizon DS-Hell. Any DS-HELL is better than AO-Hell

For better service than AOL, please hang up and type in www.dslreports.com.
From there you will be able to navigate to a DSL or Cable service in your area that is marginally better than AOL. You can ask and see if you can port your broadband connection over minus the AOL.
But from previous forums in the posting, I believe the instruction manual helps or perhaps some FAQ's or troubleshooting guides that the manufacturer offers for that product you are having difficulty with.
