What is lapping?

I hear people talkng about lapping their heatsinks. What is it?

The process of making a heatsink perfectly flat and smooth to ensure the most amount of contact with the cpu core in order to dissipate more heat thus lowering your temps. Dimmreaper wrote a good article on lapping, i know its in the tips and techniques section somewhere but heres the link to their site
