How would i apply a hsf to this?

remove the black cover apply thermal paste then the hsf just snaps on?

is it easy or should i try it old an older cpu first?

Generally the heatsink and fan mount to the cpu with the back cover on and 4 pins or screws go thru from the front or back depending on the heatsink.

Check out "Removing the Cover from a PIII" in CPU section of Tips and Techniques from the front. You'll want to have a HSF specific to the Slot 1 CPU, too. There are still a lot of quality HSFs aroundfor Slot 1
