I'm looking to O/C my P4 1.6, I already tried it w/the stock HSF, but really didn't feel that safe...I was looking at this: MCX4000 (http://www.crazypc.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=120199&Product_Code=50792)

instead of that TMD fan, i was going to put a Vantec Tornado TD8038H on it (Tornado (http://www.crazypc.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=120199&Product_Code=5740))

Am I going about this all wrong? I'm new to O/C'ing and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated..

You should be able to overclock a little with the stock hsf. See how far you can go with stock voltage and stock hsf. If you want to go further than that though by increasing the voltage then it is a good idea to go with another heatsink such as the one you listed. Have a little fun now, Overclock

Well, I was able to get it to run at 2.4 Ghz with the stock hsf but it was hot because my chip needed 1.78volts. Until I changed it I was able to run safely at 2133Mhz at a good temp. Some people with newer 1.6A chips have reported being able to get 2.4 with stock voltage, so give it a whirl.

I wouldn't pump it up too much without a good cooler on it. Just in case. I've heard the 1.6's go till the cows come home, and sometimes with sock cooling. But if yours isn't one that OC's very well, do you really want to risk the CPU if things go badly?

If he doesn't bump the voltage at all, then there should be no worries. Go to the cpu database from the front page and look your chip up to see what others have done.
