View Full Version : Can this freezer be modified?

I bought this 4cubic foot freezer to use as a reservoir/water chiller for my water coolant. However, unlike most freezers that come with a moulded plastic inserts. This one however has some sort of tin/metal inside and it has seams. I am worried it will leak water into the internal insulation.

I could have got an 8cubic foot freezer with a moulded plastic insert for just a few bucks more but I thought it would be too big and use a lot of power to cool the water.

Can I get some feed back?
1) Will this metal insert effect the quality of the water. ie corrosion.
2) Can I find some sort of silicon that will hold up to the pressure of the water and anitfreezer?

My my, you ARE desperate for lower temps!

I'm sure a fridge will never work - but THAT puppy might! You're gonna have to keep the computer running and cracking SETI/RC5/Folding at Home full time to keep your water from freezing though. I guess antifreeze will work if you can adjust the temp up to a warmer setting. Don't forget - its a DEEP freezer! :)

My suggestion would be to just use some big secondary reservoir inside of the freezer instead of filling the freezer itself.

MsNath, Are we getting a little obsesive/compulsive here. Wow, that looks like a great project. I would think that a good silicone sealant would work fine
and keeping the water/antifreeze above freezing would make this set up rock. LOL
Keep us posted on your progress.

My freezer is metal inside to. Water wetter and antifreeze prevent any corosion and an extra bead of silicone in all the corners and seams has been working fine for me. I used Dap Aquarium Sealent. I figure if it is good enough to build fish tanks with it should stop a freezer from leaking.

I also run the freezer on it's lowest setting because no matter how cold I make the water it will over 7-8 hours stabalize at -12C under full load.

I'd use kitchen and bath silicon, or maybe JB weld.

Obsesive-compulsive? More like buget minded, trying to get the most bang for the buck. But I may be a little biased having done the same thing myself.

Remember sanity is only relative to ones own state of mind!

I'd totaly gut the thing for a smaller reservoir, maybe 1 gallon. But I just don't like a big ol thing like that taking up space since it's at a premium (I'm trailer trash... heh). I honestly don't even know how possible my suggestion is, but you could add exta insulation instead of having all of that wasted space.

WoW MsNath. That cooler is just what I may need. I am sure there may or may not be more practical ways to get cold temps, but the setup would have to look nice ebcause my mom is a neat freak. This would definitely pull it off. Anyway, I was wondering where you got this freezer from and how much it cost you? Also, do you plan on drilling through a side to feed the hoses through? Do you plan on keeping the water pump in there too? Are you single? Wait how did that get there...
