is USB 2.0 is a must if we want to use cdrw driver as external?? can we put a CDRW 32x into a USB 1.1 ex case? i know USB 2.0 is much much faster than USB 1.1 but i'm still not planning upgrade to 2.0 yet (tight budget!, specially for notebook acc.).
You'll definifely need a drive with burn proof, just link or something similar, or limit the burn speed on the software. The bandwidth just isn't there to support a burner that fast. You may want to consider a USB 2.0 enclosure. It's backwards compatible to 1.1 till you get a pc card for the notebook and/or PCI card for the desktop. You'll be limited to 1.1 specs till you can afford the adapters, but have room for upgrades without too much additional money. Here's an example on one of the enclosures, they have PCI USB 2.0 cards for under 20 also. PC cards for notebooks elsewhere for 40-50.

USB1.1 only has 10MBit/s. So you can't burn faster than 8x.
Get a drive with buffer underun protection.
