Strange script in file name.

My friend picked up a file with the following name:

linkrd%3F_lang%3DEN%26lah%3D2a41b577e6e8bbdfba0634 d11f9269e8%26lat%3D1027128184%26hm___action%3Dhttp %253a%252f%252fwww%252eallamericanmilitary%253www% java=TRUE[1].gif

It wouldnt open no matter what, not with notepad nothing, and couldnt even be deleted from windows. He had to boot with Linux and delete it from there.

He thinks it was some kind of java applet made to report what he was browsing and the files he was accessing to some government agencies.

Any ideas???

Looks like nothing but you never know.

I would tell him you did a Google search and found that it is a porn tracker that the government uses to track sexual deviants. And that when you looked into your computer shut itself off and needed to be formatted.

Play into his paranoia. Even if you don't know what the file is, watching him walk around looking over his shoulder for about a week is always fun, lol.

I wouldn't go with the porn angle, I would go with something military since part of the script reads
www%252eallamericanmilitary%253www
Tell him the military is getting really nosy because the experts say the next major terror attack will be via computers and their tracking potential threats before 'detaining' them for interrogation:D

I think you meant 'cruel' (or did you?). Well, I am personally a fairly paranoid individual and I would investigate the file further.

Oh, and that's a cookie which most likely could not be opened/deleted due to the moronic file access system windoze uses.

I got a file like that on my Win2K box, I had to share the directory, and go in with a windows95 client to delte the file, weird.

Something to do with the length of the file name, I thought it was an NTFS bug.

I got the file from an ad at UserFriendly.org, I sent them a note. haven't had another.

Honestly, if we had thought that there was something to worry about, you would not have seen the joking. The rule of thumb that I would use is if deleting it is difficult but it doesn't do anything that you can identify, (and there are enough progs out there to help you find the dangers) Then scream in frustration now and then but be happy it wasn't worse and keep trying different avenue til you find the one that kills it;)
