using thermal paste

im going to put some thermal paste upon my processor because overheating problem and id like to know if i can start using it right after have reinstalled everything? Should i wait for some time or i can use it as soon as possible?

Thermal compound or paste?
I wouldnt put a adhesive on the cpu it will be alot harder to get the heatsink back off.
If its not adhesive then you can use it right away.
