Im not really sure what that means, but after a defrag, xp told me it was unable to defragment some files....I have no idea why, and Im curious to know if could cause problems. I ahve defragged once since then and didnt see the same msg....but there is a little red line symolic of a fragmented file on the litle meter thingy...what gives?

Some system files cannot be defragmented, this is completely normal. It shouldn't be too much of a problem. Just keep the rest of your drive defragmented.
It can't defrag them because they're either system files that can't be moved, or files that are in use. Nothing to worry about. That's completely normal :)
You can use O&O Defrag (http://www.oo-software.com) to defrag those files. It can even defrag your MFT, Page File & registry if you want.
