I use ViaVoice (v8 Pro) to dictate reports in Word 2000. Any suggestions for system upgrades to increase performance? By that I mean to increase the rate at which dictated words appear on the screen. I had read that speech recognition programs were processor intensive but I had not realized the relative importance of the chipset and memory. It looks like P4 sytems with rambus or certain chipsets and DDR are much better, judging by Sphinx benchmarks, but I could use some advise regarding any less expensive upgrade options at the moment. Thanks.:)

Welcome to the forums.

Actually, we'd have to see your current system specs to recommend how you should upgrade. You should also offer a general idea on how much you are willing to spend. I was getting reasonable performance even on my laptop with a Celeron 433. I don't use the speech recognition much, but when I do, anything over 500 MHz with a good sound chip set should work fine. I'm not sure that higher speed will will buy you any better accuracy, but response time will increase accordingly.

Using an Athlon XP 1800 asus a7v266e board OCZ 2400 ddr memory, TB Santa Cruz. Willing to spend about $200.00 now, but $500.00+ in December. I dictate a lot of 3 to 6 page reports. That's why the speed makes a difference to me. Thanks.
