Female DFP to Male DVI -- Will this work...?

I'm calling out to those people with DFP LCD monitors (or who know of such things). Do you know if a female DFP to a male DVI will work in translating the signal well? I'm thinking about getting a SGI 1600sw and it has a male DFP connector that you can buy an optional $350 adapter for *unless* the DFP to DVI connector will work ($20). Anyone have any experience with this?
