No, it isn't a RAID controller. It has two channels, so it can support 4 IDE devices. But not in an array.

would a RAID controller be able to use only 1 harddrive hooked up to it instead of 2 harddrives?

Yes, you can use RAID controllers as standard IDE controllers, but not normally the other way around.
I've read about the advantages of RAID, mostly RAID zero for the speed increase, but I've never been able to bring myself to spend the money on the necessary drives to try it out. I know I'd see a greater performance increase for my dollar by going with a better vid card than I have. Ah, to have the money to have it all!
Actually, software RAID is availble (it's in Win2000 and XP, but you need to enable it), but hardware RAID is vastly superior. PCI RAID cars aren't that expensive nowdays (around $20).

I thought I read something once about a way to do a mod to a Promise drive controller card, and reflash the BIOS in order to make it function as a RAID card. I don't remember the details, it wasn't something that interested me. I have an onboard RAID controller that I don't use. But you might look around and see if you can find it if you're interested.
Newegg has a Tekram RAID controller card for $33.00

Yes, I modded my 66 and it works great. Its simple and fast, and I havent had a problem with it in the year+ it has been running.

Then search for "SYBA"
Yeah, it's generic, and $21 shipped ($22 for ATA133)
Just check pricewatch. (search on "RAID card")

99% of IDE raid is software based anyway. Or WinRaid as it is called these days. The IDE raids are software with a boot hook.
Just my 2c. Software raid works pretty well in ms windows 2000, I have not tried it in XP.
