I started overclocking my P4 2.40b and so far i'm at 2.75mhz with voltage at v1.65 but in the process of getting from stock speed to current score started to increased on 3dMark2k1 but as i got closer to 2.70mhz my score started dropping, does anyome knows what can be cause this problem?

Here is my system specs maybe you guys can get an idea:

Gigabyte GA-8IEXP
Intel P4 2.40b (533mhz)
2x 256mb 2100 Samsung DDR (512mb Total)
Albatron Nvidia Gforce Ti 4600 (not o/c yet)

I also have another chip of memory Samsung 512mb 2700 DDR and i'm debating on wether to put this one to replace my 2 256mb dotn know really what to do.

Any suggestions will be very much appreciated

what's your memory speed? at stock cpu speed, and at 2.7Ghz. are you actually running slower memory speed at 2.7GHz than at slower CPU speed??

Yep, sounds like a memory ratio problem. Some MB's will auto switch to 4:3 after fsb's over 133. Two basic options that will fix and/or greatly increase your performance depending on the overclockablilty of your ram is:

Manually config your memory ratio to 1:1. This will greatly increase your performance and bandwidth over 4:3.

If you can, (don't know full capability of your MB) change your ratio to 3:4. This will drastically increase your memory performance and bandwidth but is very memory specific. Some brands just won't do this.

Good luck!

What's your memory settings @2.75Ghz ?
As the others have already told you before me....it sure looks like a memory timing issue.
That pc-2700 stick will help you out for sure.

Ok this is where i am right now, I just took off both 256mb DDR 2100 (samsung) and installed my 512mb DDR 2700 (samsung) booted up with my cpu overclocked to 2.75mhz still, ran 3DMark2k1 and i gain over 2000 points from the last time i ran it wiht the previous to chips of memory. now going by why you guys are telling me this is how my system is set in the bios so far...

CPU System bus @ 155mhz
Memory FSB @ 308
CPU Speed @ 2.77mhz
Havent run a benchmark at 2.77mhz yet

what do you guys think?

BTW the scored i got with the new DDR 2700 was 12318.

Any other suggestions?

well you definitely can't set your DDR333 to 3:4 (cpu:mem) ratio cause that'll mean you'll be running 206.67x2mhz and your ram can only do 333mhz or so.. Since your score increased, don't see a problem with it now... Hope other guys with similiar speeds and setup can compare their scores with yours and if it checks then it's all good...

If your using easytune That is the problem my board did the same thing
I uninstalled easytune works like a charm
EASYTUNE IS CRAP

ntejensen no i'm not using EasyTune, i completly agree with you but i was actually doing my o/cing from the bios. Ok guys the Fastest most stable settings i got so far was with the CPU Frecuency at 161mhz and the Memory FSB at 322 giving me a final cpu speed of 2.90mhz.
Since you guys are pretty good at this and know lot more than me about memory could someone recomend me a Memory brand and DDR Speed that you guys know it'll allow me to overclock it more than what this Samsung chip does? I had Crucial in mind but dont know if it'll be much overclocable compare to other brands ive seen in the forum.

Again thanks alot for taking your time to help me!

that really sucks buddie.:( i had a 2.4b chip, (oem) and i sold it to bignuttz for $180, and it DOES 160fsb on default voltage. 2880.:p it was, it is a pre shrink chip, and it rocks. i cant believe that all you guys are getting these bad 2.4b's, when this oem is sooooooooooo good.:eh?:

ok after letting my system run for 24hrs so far overclecked at 2.90mhz my system its pretty stable, i ran 3DMark2k1 and my score didnt go up much 12400, I'm planning on getting a better overclocable memory and try to go a little higher with the FSB.

I'll keep you guys posted!!!

Looks pretty good so far, grab some Corsair XMS DDR3200 CAS2.0 and you'll be able to run the 3:4 ratio at 161mhz fsb (2.9ghz) which will give you 215mhz on the ram so you'll be running at DDR 430. This ram has no problem running at these speeds and you're 3Dmark will be around 14,000 if you have a top of the line video card. Good luck

SoL honestly i dont even know how to change to ratio on my board? would you happend to know how to on my board? Gigabyte GA-8IEXP using Bios Version F6? if not its kool i'll try to find out :D what place would you recommend to buy the Memory from? the one you're mentioning?

go into the BIOS where you set the o/c setting, there's should have some sort of memory ratio, or some sort of ratio thing like 3:4/1:1/etc.

get the Corsair XMS 3200 cas2 from newegg

Newegg has the 3200 for $188 and 3500 for $210 and free shipping on both, I don't know how good the 3500 works I't must have just come out but it would be garenteed to run at DDR433 but probably more. Just make sure what ever you get you get the XMS CAS2.0. And just like Landshark said the settings should be in the bios where you would adjust the cpu frequency and clock settings there will be a DRAM selection for the ratio at which the ram runs compared to the cpu. Select user define and use the 3:4 ratio so your cpu will be running 75% of what your ram is running at. (161/215) 161x18 (2.9ghz) as an example. So when you set your cpu frequency at 161mhz, your ram will run at 215mhz(DDR430) or higher if it is stable. Try to go as high as you can using the 3:4 ratio because after a certain point your ram will hit its limit and you will have to go back to the 1:1 ratio if you keep going up in cpu frequency. You will get better benchmarks with the 3:4 ratio because you will be getting higher memory bandwith. If your computer is really stable at high fsb frequencies then I would go with the PC3500 because it will probably run higher than the 3200 but im just guessing on that because I know of people running they're XMS 3200 close to 500mhz (DDR4000). Unless they're running 5ns chips on the 3500 instead of the 6ns like on the 3200, they'll probably run the same speeds. Also keep in mind you will have to increase both cpu and ram voltages the higher you go, with my 2.26 I had my 3200 running stable at 432mhz at 2.61 volts. Good luck

Do you guys think Kingston DDR333 can run at 354mhz without any heat problems or stability problems?

From what I hear Kingston doesn't like overclocking...

...then again you will hear all sorts of different oppionions about different products.

I would personally opt for the Corsair. I will be upgrading to that brand myself soon. I hear nothing but good things about this company.

ok after checking the BIOS on my GA - 8IEXP as you guys told me ...
I went under FREQUENCY / VOLTAGE(where i've been o/cing so far) and this is what i found:
* CPU Host Frequency (Mhz): 161
* Fixed PCI/AGP Frequency (Disabled)
* Host/DRAM Clock Ratio: 2.0 (it has 3 options 1.5, 2.0 and auto)
My Memory frequency is currently at 322, i didnt really see anything like 1:1 or 3:4 under my DRAM Clock ratio, maybe it doesnt have it I know they have a new version of my bios perhaps that one has it, anyone with my same board has been able to change the ratio?

If you hit controll f1 it will make another menu option in the bios available

Yea but still doesnt give me an option to change as SoL told me :(
I dont see those settings option there :(

sorry i missed the * Host/DRAM Clock Ratio: 2.0 (it has 3 options 1.5, 2.0 and auto) in your last post.

those 3 settings are your only options i'm running the f8 bios version still no change in memory timing options.

ntejensen:
Yea i just flashed my bios thinking that it will probably will have that option as a new feature but still the same :( i guess the board it self doesnt support timing configuration, dont really know. I flashed from F6 to F8 but the same ... oh well maybe a new board wouldnt hurt LOL

meja: what did you get your 2.4 oc'd to
and where is the chip from
just courious because i have 2, 2.4's one costa rica and one malay
wondering which will overclock better

damn i trew away the box already :( and i dont remember reading it on teh chip it self, its a 2.40b and its overclocked currently to 2.90mhz, i'll try to find out where was it made ;)

ntejensen
10-01-02, 10:30 PM
let me know if you find it
both the 2.4's i have are malay (sl6d7, andsl67z)
the 2.53 must have been the costa rican chip (not going to take the processor out to check)
