This is probably a stupid question, but how the hell do I get the hs off a PIII cpu without breaking the black plastic pins?

I don't think it's possible to remove the pins without breaking them, so is there a cheap way to replace them, preferably free.

you are talking about the slot 1 p3 - i hope.

have a look here: http://www.overclockers.com/tips04/
http://www.overclockers.com/tips33/
http://www.overclockers.com/tips35/

i am sure one of these will work for you - however they all apply to different heatsink designes. be careful i recently (yeh, i was bored) killed a p3 350 doing that

Yeah, slot 1. Tip 33 is the closest, but still not really what i need. It says To break off the pins I'm talking about, but if I do that then I need a replacement for them. So what do I use to replace them?

Would this be easier if I had a picture?

i dont think a picture would help, as i have already done something like that with my p2 - however i would like to know why you want to take the heatsink off, and more importantly why you want to keep the pins intact - as these are only used for that heatsink and replacement heatsinks use different methods of attachment.

I want to swap the hs on 2 cpus. Mainly because 1 is going to go into a workstation and the other is for a server. I think if I put a screw in the holes and push really hard they will come out, but I'm not in a hurry to be trying stuff without knowing if it will work.

ok, another idea is to break the pins off, but then drill a 3mm hole though where they should be and reattach the heatsink with some 3m bolts - i know they fit because i made a waterblock to mount on my p2.

unfortunatly i cannot help you by telling you another way to do it - i only know the way the guides showed me
